Kurt Elmgren (born August 31, 1943 in Hovmantorp , Lessebo municipality ) is a former Swedish wrestler and Olympic participant in 1972 in Munich .

Career

Kurt-Benny Christer Elmgren began wrestling as a teenager in his hometown, and after initial successes in the national field, he switched to the larger sports club Brottningsklubben (BK) Enig Växjö . In the national area he initially wrestled two styles, but later concentrated fully on the free style.

He celebrated his first major success in 1961 when he was Swedish junior champion in the Greco-Roman style welterweight. In 1965 it was used for the first time in a major international championship, the World Cup in Manchester . He still had to learn the hard way there in the free style in welterweight, because he lost to Russell Camilleri from the United States and Guliko Sagaradze from the USSR and only came in 14th place.

At the beginning of his career he was also on the mat several times in international matches against the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1965 he fought twice against Peter Nettekoven from Bonn - Duisdorf in a draw. In 1966 he won two points in Sweden over Peter Nettekoven and in 1967 he lost to Reinhard Zeiher from SV Brötzingen in Germany and won over Otto Alt from VfK Schifferstadt .

In 1966 he finished 5th at the European Championships in Karlsruhe in the free style in welterweight with victories over Roland Gachoud from Switzerland and Constadios Kozanidis from Greece and defeats to Mahmut Atalay from Turkey and Zuran Aladschikow from Bulgaria . That was his best result in an international championship.

At the European Championships in 1967 in Istanbul Kurt Elmgren lost the welterweight against Károly Bajkó from Hungary and Ion Popescu from Romania and finished 12th. Even at the European Championships in Skoplje in 1968 , he did not come to a victory. But he reached a draw against Basri Yilmaz from Turkey and lost again to Károly Bajkó and Ludovic Ambrus from Romania. That resulted in 10th place for him.

At the European Championship in 1970 in Berlin (East) he started in the middleweight division. He was defeated there by Vasile Iorga from Romania and Ivan Iliew from Bulgaria and finished in 12th place. Things went much better for him at the 1971 World Cup in Sofia , because he won there in the middleweight division over Turan Sahin from Turkey and against Andras Deak from Hungary . Against the top wrestler Horst Stottmeister from the GDR and against the multiple world champion Lewan Tediaschwili from the USSR he was defeated and thus reached 10th place.

At the end of his career, Kurt Elmgren started in 1972 at the Olympic Games in Munich . He was in good shape there and scored wins over Lupe Lara from Cuba , Ghulam Dastagir from Afghanistan and Tömöriin Artag from Mongolia . After a defeat in his fourth fight against Levan Tediaschwili he was eliminated and finished in 7th place.
