Vasile Iorga

Vasile Iorga (born February 19, 1945 in Măraşu , Brăila County ) is a former Romanian wrestler . He was the winner of a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and vice- world champion and vice- European champion in free style in the middleweight division.

Career

Vasile Iorga began wrestling as a teenager in Brăila , where he became a member of the CS Progresul Brăila sports club . He focused on the free style and was trained by Alexandru Tătaru. He had reached the Romanian top class in 1968. He was used that year in Bucharest in an international match against the Federal Republic of Germany and defeated Reinhard Zeiher on points in the welterweight division .

In 1969 Vasile Iorga also started at an international championship for the first time. At the European Championships in Sofia he just missed a medal with a 4th place in the middleweight division. In 1970 Vasile Iorga stayed with the Romanian national wrestling team on an international battle trip in the Federal Republic of Germany and defeated Peter Neumair from Hallbergmoos , Adolf Seger from Freiburg and Lothar Dunke from Efferen . In the following years he won medals at nine international championships. His greatest success was winning the Olympic bronze medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in the middleweight division. He wrestled against the eventual Olympic champion Levan Tediaschwili from the USSR , but lost to the American John Peterson (wrestler) .

In 1973 Vasile Iorga was runner- up middleweight world champion in Tehran . He only lost in the final against the Soviet Vasily Sjulschin . He had won this championship against the strong wrestlers Yosuke Nagano from Japan and Ismail Abilow from Bulgaria . Vasile Iorga won another runner-up title at the 1975 European Championship in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . Here he won u. a. via Günter Spindler from the GDR and Henryk Mazur from Poland , but lost to Ismail Abilow in the final.

Vasile Iorga also celebrated a great success at the European Championship in 1970 in East Berlin , where he took 3rd place in the middleweight division. But he managed a sensational victory over Olympic and world champion Lewin Tediaschwili at this event . Vasile Iorga made his last start at an international championship at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . He was defeated there but after two victories against weaker opponents against the Soviet wrestler Viktor Novoshilov and against Ismail Abilov and only came in 9th place in the final result.

Vasile Iorga was a big starter during his career. He took part in an unusually large number of international tournaments and won a lot of them. He defeated world-class wrestlers like Adolf Seger from the Federal Republic of Germany, Benno Paulitz , Günter Spindler and Frank Birke from the GDR , Magomedchan Arazilow from the USSR , István Kovács and Károly Bajkó from Hungary , as well as Mehmet Uzun from Turkey and others. v. m.

Vasile Iorga was a member of the army, but worked after his active time as a trainer in Brăila. From 1990 to 1992 he was also president of the CS Progresul Brăila sports club. Now he's retired.
