Personal history

Adolf Seger comes from a wrestling family: his father and five brothers were all active wrestlers. Five-year-old Adolf received his first wrestling lessons from his father. The sporting role model was his older brother Edmund (1937-2019), who fought in the German national wrestling team at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome .

Adolf Seger is married and a father of three. For 42 years he worked as a postman for the Deutsche Bundespost and Deutsche Post AG in Zähringen ; he has been retired since January 2010. In his free time, he campaigns for local politics, charity and the promotion of sports. Seger is still fit and active: in table tennis , in cycling and in strength training . He's still trained today and still holds his competition weight. He is also active as a training partner and coach in his association AV Germania St. Georgen .

Athletic career

Adolf Seger started in freestyle (world and middleweight), and he was often German, European and world champion . His greatest successes also included winning medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal . Seger is considered to be one of the best German wrestlers of all time. In particular, he has further developed fighting techniques on the ground. With the Seger grip named after him , he has achieved numerous shoulder victories.

Even as a young wrestler, Adolf Seger had major health problems. As early as the mid-1960s, he was not only suffering from the " cauliflower ear " typical of wrestlers , but above all from shoulder, back and knee injuries. During this time, Seger was under constant treatment at the Freiburg University Medical Center . The injuries delayed his international sports career for several years.

Seger's strength and athleticism were among the best in wrestling worldwide. The strenuous training and "weight gain" before competitions moved Seger in 1975 to switch from world champion to middleweight division.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Adolf Seger was a ten-time freestyle world champion among the wrestling veterans (Masters); this is unmatched anywhere in the world. Seger donated the prize money he received for this, amounting to US $ 15,000, to Children's Cancer Aid.

On September 11, 1972, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his sporting achievements.
