from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Egon Karlsson (born November 15, 1945 in Trollhättan ) is a former Swedish wrestler . He was a two-time medalist at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and European champion in 1975 in the free style and in the Greco-Roman style welterweight.

Career

January Karlsson grew up in Trollhättan and began at the local "Atletklubb" with the rings . In this club he became an excellent wrestler in both styles, free style u. Greco-Roman Style, educated. In 1965 Jan became the Swedish Free Style Master for the first time. In total, Jan won no fewer than 28 Swedish championship titles in his career.

Jan, who was a firefighter in Trollhättan, began his international wrestling career in 1965. At this year's World Championships in free style in Manchester , he finished 10th in the lightweight. But Jan showed his great disposition as early as the next year when he narrowly missed a medal at the European Championships in Karlsruhe in the free style in the lightweight with a 4th place. He was only defeated in this tournament by the outstanding Soviet champion Zarbeg Beriaschwili .

Jan then won his first medal at an international championship at the European championship in 1967 in Istanbul in free style in the lightweight. He accomplished the feat there and a. also defeat the experienced Bulgarian world champion Enju Valtschew-Dimow and after a defeat against Zarbeg Beriaschwili to occupy the 2nd place.

Also in 1968 Jan won a medal at the European Championships in Skoplje . He won three fights there and was defeated by Yuri Gusow from the USSR and against Klaus Rost from the Federal Republic of Germany . The Olympic Games in Mexico City were very disappointing , because he lost on points in his first two fights against Enju Valschew-Dimow and Wayne Wells from the USA and only ended up in 17th place.

In 1969 and 1970 Jan won two medals at the European Championships. For the first time he succeeded in 1969 in Modena a medal in Greco-Roman. To win style in welterweight, while he won the medal in 1970 in free style and won over the German champion Adolf Seger .

Jan Karlsson did very well at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . He first won the silver medal in the free style welterweight division . He won again over Adolf Seger, who never got along with Jan Karlsson's upright ring style, but lost on the other hand u. a. against Wolfgang Nitschke from the GDR . He also lost to the Bulgarian Jantscho Pavlov and therefore did not come to a final fight against the American Wayne Wells, who won the gold medal. Although Jan Karsson had to contest six tough fights in the freestyle tournament, he also started in the Greco-Roman. Tournament, scored four wins and after losing to Iwan Kolew from Bulgaria in the fifth fight , he was eliminated by winning the bronze medal .

In 1973 Jan confirmed the success of 1972, because he again won medals in both styles at the World Cup in Tehran . In Greco-Roman Style he became vice world champion with four wins, one draw and one loss to Iwan Kolew and in free style it was enough for him to win the bronze medal.

1974 was less successful for Jan Karlsson. He could not win any medals at the World or European Championships. All the more sensational was his win at the European championship in 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in the Greco-Roman style in welterweight. He remained successful in seven fights and defeated world-class athletes with Iwan Kolew, Vítězslav Mácha from the ČSSR and Klaus-Peter Göpfert from the GDR.

After this terrific success, Jan wrestled in several other international championships, including the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , but he could not achieve such great successes and placed between ranks 7 and 10.

Interesting are the results of the fights scored by Jan Karlsson against German opponents at these championships. Against Adolf Seger he wrestled three times and won all three fights, against Wolfgang Nitschke from Leipzig he lost both fights that he fought against him and it was the same against Fred Hempel . Against Klaus-Peter Göpfert from Zella-Mehlis Jan won two fights and lost one. Against Klaus Rost from Witten he fought a fight that he lost.

Since the end of his international wrestling career after the Olympic Games in 1976, Jan Karlsson has been working as a wrestling trainer. At the moment he is training the wrestling club "BK Snar" Boden .
