Klaus Rost (born March 2, 1940 in Witten ) is a former German wrestler .

Career

Klaus Rost started wrestling at KSV Witten 07 at the age of 12 . In 1958 he was German youth champion (Greco-Roman style, up to 62 kg body weight). As early as the next year he was the first German champion in the senior class. From then on, a successful wrestling career began, which lasted until 1973.

Already in 1963 he won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman style at the world championship in Helsingborg in the lightweight, after moving to local rivals Sport-UNION Annen. His greatest success was without a doubt winning the Olympic silver medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in a lightweight, free style.

For this achievement he received the silver laurel leaf from the hand of the Federal President on December 11, 1964.

Four years later he narrowly missed a medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico City with a 4th place in the Greco-Roman style. Another good 4th place was achieved by Klaus Rost at the 1969 World Cup in Mar del Plata .

Klaus Rost won a total of 16 German championship titles. He was one of the few wrestlers who was successful in both styles, the Greco-Roman and the free style. His toughest competitors at these German championships were Franz Schmitt from Aschaffenburg , Manfred Schöndorfer from Bad Reichenhall and Horst Bergmann from Lichtenfels .

After his active time he was a youth coach in Witten.
