Eckhard Schulz
Eckhard Schulz (* 1940 ) is a former German wrestler .
Career
Eckhard Schulz was a member of the ASK Vorwärts Rostock . The trained lathe operator developed into one of the best German wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style in lightweight around 1960 . Among the seniors, he first drew attention to himself at the GDR championships in 1962, when he was GDR lightweight champion before Klaus Pohl . He also won this title in 1963 and 1967.
But Eckhard Schulz only came to international championships in 1963, where he took an excellent 4th place at the world championships in Helsingborg and thus just missed a medal. In 1964 he fought as a representative of the GDR in the all-German Olympic elimination for the games in Tokyo in the lightweight against the Aschaffenburg Franz Schmitt . Both athletes fought three rousing battles, which were perfectly even and therefore ended "draws" three times. According to the regulations agreed between the associations, the scales had to determine the winner. The lighter one was Franz Schmitt, who received the ticket to Tokyo with it. For Eckhard Schulz these were certainly the bitterest hours of his wrestling life.
In the next few years, Eckhard Schulz was replaced by Klaus Pohl in terms of performance in the GDR. He therefore ended his wrestling career in 1968.
