World Wrestling Championships 1963

In contrast to all previous world championships, the 1963 wrestling world championships were held separately by style at different locations. The wrestlers were divided into eight weight classes.

The Soviet Union won the most medals with a total of eight gold, four silver and one bronze medal. Alexander Medwed was able to celebrate his second world title after 1962. One year after winning the World Cup in 1963, Imre Polyák was only second behind Gennady Sapunov .

Greco-Roman

The Greco-Roman style competitions took place in Helsingborg from July 1st to 3rd, 1963 .

Freestyle

The free style competitions were held in Sofia from May 31 to June 2, 1963 . The wrestlers from the Soviet Union secured medals in seven of the eight competitions. Wilfried Dietrich was fourth in the heavyweight division (+97 kg), the best German .
