Wrestling World Championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The world championships in wrestling are held annually by the FILA , with the exception of the years in which the Summer Olympic Games take place. The first world championship was held in Vienna in 1904. However, it is questionable whether the world championships that took place before the Second World War can be counted as official: mostly only participants from the host country took part, one could not speak of world championships. In addition to these world championships, there were numerous other world championships that are now considered unofficial. In 1923 there were the last wrestling world championships until 1950. From then on, the world championships were held regularly, except for the Olympic years. World wrestling championships have also been held for women since 1987. In contrast to men, women also wrestle in the Olympic years, since women's wrestling has only been Olympic since 2004 and competitions in all weight classes are not held at the Olympic Games.

overview

Abbreviations: Gwk = weight class / n. The most successful nation means the nation that comes first in the medal table. Alternatively, there is also a FILA points system.
