World Wrestling Championships 2009
The 2009 wrestling world championships took place from September 21 to 27, 2009 in the Messecenter in Herning . It was wrestled in both Greco-Roman and free styles . The wrestlers were divided into seven weight classes. A total of 639 wrestlers took part, 245 of them in Greco-Roman and 222 in freestyle, as well as 172 female wrestlers.
Preparatory and qualifying tournaments
On the continental level, championship tournaments were held in the run-up to the world championships, which mostly also served as qualifications for the world championships:
- February 27th : Oceania Championships in Samoa
- March 31 : European Championships in Vilnius , Lithuania
- April 22nd : Pan American Championships in Maracaibo , Venezuela
- May 2nd : Asian Championships in Pattaya , Thailand
- May 15 : African Championships in Casablanca , Morocco
At the international level, this also applied to the following tournaments:
- June 25th : Mediterranean Games in Pescara , Italy
- July 1st : Summer Universiade in Belgrade , Serbia
- July 27 : Golden Grand Prix in Baku , Azerbaijan

Freestyle
The freestyle competitions took place from September 21 to 23, 2009. The wrestlers from Russia secured medals in six of the seven competitions. Only Abdussalam Gadissow could not place himself in the medal ranks with a fifth place in the weight class up to 84 kg.

The 22-year-old North Korean Yang-il, twelfth at the Olympic Games in Beijing the previous year, celebrated with the victory his first major international title in bantamweight. His opponent in the final, Sezer Akgül from Turkey, who was only 21 years old, had eliminated the Russian Viktor Lebedev in the semifinals, but then lost to the 1.57 meter tall North Korean.
The Olympic champion Cedujo was not at the start. The defending champion Bessik Kuduchow competed in the category up to 60 kg, where he celebrated his second world title.

The 2007 world champion in the category up to 55 kg became world champion for the second time in his career. In the final, he defeated the Azerbaijani Selimchan Chusseinow, who had won the World Cup in Tehran in March 2009 in front of Evgeni Chawilow and the new world champion Bessik Kuduchow. For the 28-year-old European champion Chusseinow it was the second World Cup participation after 2001 (8th place up to 58 kg).
