Oliver Hassler (born January 4, 1988 ) is a German wrestler . He was runner-up in the Greco-Roman style light heavyweight division in 2014 .

Career

Oliver Hassler started wrestling in 1992. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style and started for RG Hausen-Zell . His first trainer was Karl Hug . Other trainers with whom he worked were or are Frank Heinzelbecker, Maik Bullmann , Jannis Zamanduridis and Michael Carl. Oliver Hassler has been playing for the Bundesliga club SV Germania Weingarten since 2009 . The 1.85 meter tall athlete was a member of a sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr until 2014 .

As a young wrestler, he first drew attention to himself in 2004 when he took 3rd place in the German B youth championship in the weight class up to 85 kg. In 2005 he became German A youth champion in the weight class up to 100 kg and this year he also competed at the Junior European Championships (Cadets) in Tirana , where he finished 12th in this weight class.

In 2006 Oliver Hassler took 4th place in the German Junior Light Heavyweight Championships and 7th place in the men's championships. In 2007 he came in this championship 3rd place in the juniors and 7th place in the men. In 2008 he was then German junior light heavyweight champion. This year he also came back to the international junior championships. At the Junior European Championship in Košice he finished 8th in the light heavyweight division, but a few weeks later at the Junior World Championship in Istanbul after a defeat against Mohammed Reza Akbari , Iran through victories in the consolation round over David Lengyel, Slovakia and Taisto Lalli, Finland fight for a bronze medal .

In 2009, Oliver Hassler came third in the German championship behind Andreas Fix from TuS Adelhausen and Björn Holk from KSK Neuss . National coach Maik Bullmann then nominated him for the European Championship in Vilnius. There he was defeated in the semi-heavyweight division against Sergaj Rutenko from Ukraine and came in 15th place. He was also at the start at the world championship this year in Herning / Denmark . He had drawn an extremely difficult lot and did more than respectable there. In his first fight he met Balasz Kiss from Hungary , who later became world champion and was only just defeated on points. In his next fight he came to a point victory over the world class wrestler Heiki Nabi from Estonia and in his third fight he faced another world class wrestler with Dawid Saldadze from Uzbekistan . He lost to this on points and reached 10th place.

In 2010 Oliver Hassler took 3rd place in the German light heavyweight championship behind Mirko Englich from RSV Hansa Frankfurt (Oder) and came in a good 5th place in the CISM military world championship. At the World and European Championships 2010 he was not at the start.

In 2011 he was the first German champion in the men's light heavyweight division. He referred Felix Radinger from TSV Gailbach and Mirko Englich to the places. Despite this success, he was not used in 2011 at the European Championships and the World Championships. In 2012 he represented the German colors at the European Championships in Belgrade . He defeated there in the light heavyweight Alexandros Poikilidis, Greece , Robert Papp from Romania and the Russian champion and world championship third of 2011 Rustam Totrow on points. Then he lost to the later European champion Artur Aleksanjan from Armenia and in the fight for 3rd place also against Sergej Rutenko, but achieved an excellent result with 5th place.

At the German championship taking place after this European championship, Oliver Hassler had to admit defeat on points in the final battle with Mirko Englich, the silver medalist from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , and thus came in second.

Hassler was unable to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .

In 2013, Oliver Hassler was injured several times and could not start in the German championship. In September he was able to start at the World Championships in Budapest, but retired there after the 1st round and only came in 26th place.

In 2014 he became German champion for the second time with a victory over the strong Felix Radinger from TSV Gailbach. After another injury, he was barely able to get in shape by the World Championships in Tashkent in September. In Tashkent he showed the best competition of his wrestling career so far and defeated one after another Radoslaw Grzybicki, Poland, Alin Alexuc-Ciurariu, Romania, Wladislaw Metodiew , Bulgaria and Cenk İldem , Turkey and thus stood in the final against the three-time European champion Artur Aleksanjan from Armenia he lost on points. He became vice world champion in the weight class up to 98 kg body weight. In October 2014 Oliver Hassler became CISM military world champion in Fort Dix / United States. In the final he achieved a superior victory over Sergei Jeroschkin from Ukraine.

In addition, Oliver Hassler received the honor of being named Wrestler of the Year in 2014.

In the following years, as he was often plagued by injury concerns, he was no longer able to fully build on these successes. In 2016 he just missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with a third place in the Olympic qualification in Istanbul in the weight class up to 98 kg body weight. In 2017 he came very close to the medal ranks at the European Championships in Novi Sad with a 5th place.

In 2019, Oliver Hassler won a bronze medal at the World Military Games in Wuhan in the weight class up to 97 kg with a third place.
