Herning [ ˈhɛʀneŋ ] is a city in central Jutland , Denmark . It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Herning in the Midtjylland region and an exhibition center with national importance.
history
The first documented place name Hørningh is derived from hørn (protruding hill). The suffix -ing indicates the Iron Age (500 BC to 850 AD).
The Herningsholm manor was built in 1579 on Ochsenweg between Jelling and Holstebro . Around 1840, Herning only had around 200 inhabitants, but developed into a trading center for the surrounding area , when its extensive heather areas were reclaimed in the 19th century. The starting point for the development was atypically the court and a pharmacy. The heath provided the basis for sheep farming, from which wool production developed. A whole branch of industry developed from home work, with a focus on Herning, Ikast and Brande. In 1876 a steam-powered wool spinning mill opened, which was expanded into a clothing factory in 1896. In 1877, Herning was connected to the railway network. In 1901 the population had risen to 3,700. During this early period, the Hede-og Diskontobank was also established in 1872 , the bank of which was built on the market square in 1912 and is now one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.
In 1913, Herning was granted city rights. In the 20th century, the metal and furniture industries also developed. Herning received a high school, a central hospital, a teachers' college and a theater. The Herning Højskole existed from 1961 to 2007 , whose striking 16-storey high-rise, designed by the architects Møller-Jensen and Arnfred, can be seen in the east of the city.
In 1995 a business and engineering college was founded, which today is attached to the University of Aarhus as the Institute for Forretningsudvikling og Teknologi .
From 1970 to 2006, Herning belonged to the smaller Herning municipality (1970-2006) with 541.6 km². With the local government reform on January 1, 2007, the area to which the city belongs grew to 1,321.1 km².
art
In 1976, the city founded the Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum to make the extensive donation by the artist couple Else Alfelt and Carl-Henning Pedersen accessible to the public. In special exhibitions, preferably pictures of the CoBrA group to which the couple belonged are shown.
The Herning Museum of Contemporary Art - HEART is right next door . The grandiose exhibition building, based on the shape of spread shirt sleeves, was built between 2005 and 2009 according to designs by the American architect Steven Holl . The museum began in 1977 in the Angligaard shirt factory owned by entrepreneur and patron of the arts Aage Damgaard (1917–1991).
Ingvar Cronhammar's sculpture "Elia" (2001), an 11 m high steel dome with a small circle measuring 60 m in diameter , rises next to the art museum . A gas burner flames a 1 m wide column of fire over 8 m into the sky at irregular intervals for 25 seconds; the time of discharge is randomly determined by a computer.
The Danish Photo Museum shows the technical and artistic development of photography since 1839.
