← World Cup 2017 |
The 26th men's handball world championship was held in Denmark and Germany in 2019 . The World Championship was the first to be organized in cooperation between two handball associations. At the same time it was the 22nd men's handball world championship held in Europe.
Applicants
The associations from Denmark and Germany , Slovakia and Hungary , Poland , Norway and Sweden applied to host the 26th World Cup .
Slovakia and Hungary wanted to host the 2019 tournament together. As part of what was then Czechoslovakia, Slovakia hosted the 1964 and 1990 World Championships . For Hungary this World Cup would have been the first that the association would have organized.
Poland also aimed to host the first title fights in the country. The association had already organized the 2016 European Championship .
The Norwegian Handball Federation withdrew its application three days before the decision on the venue. The Swedish Handball Federation also withdrew its application shortly before the decision. For Sweden it would have been the fifth edition of the competition after 1954 , 1967 , 1993 and 2011 .
Denmark and Germany submitted a double application to the IHF and wanted to host the tournament together. The Danish Handball Federation hosted the 1978 World Cup , and Germany has already hosted four World Cups ( 1938 , 1961 , 1982 and 2007 ). The 1958 and 1974 World Championships were also held by the German Handball Federation in the GDR .
host
On October 28, 2013, the IHF announced at its congress in Doha that the World Cup would take place in Denmark and Germany . For the first time in its history, the tournament was held jointly by two associations.
Venues
The games were played at a total of six locations, four of which are in Germany ( Berlin , Cologne , Munich and Hamburg ) and two in Denmark ( Copenhagen and Herning ).
The opening game took place in Berlin, the final was played in Herning. The four preliminary round groups each had a fixed venue (Berlin, Munich, Copenhagen or Herning). The preliminary round matches of the German team were played in Berlin, those of the Danish national team in Herning. The IHF schedule ensured that the two hosts could play the main round in their own country: the German team in Cologne, the Danish team again in Herning. The two semi-finals took place in Hamburg, which were also the only two games played there.

Main round
The main round replaced the round of 16 and the quarter-finals, which were used in the last World Championships. 2 groups of 6 teams were formed. The results of the teams against the teams that moved into the main round from their own preliminary round group were taken with them. The games took place from January 19th to 23rd. The placements of Germany and Denmark were of particular importance, because the games were scheduled differently depending on the placement. In Copenhagen the further placements were determined in the President's Cup .
Evaluation criteria
The main round games were point games. The team got 2 points for each win and 1 point for a tie. There were no points for a defeat.
In the event of a tie between two or more teams after the main round, the following criteria will decide on the placement:
- higher number of points in direct encounters between teams with equal points;
- better goal difference in direct encounters between teams with the same points;
- higher number of goals in direct encounters between teams with equal points;
- better goal difference from all games;
- higher number of plus goals in all games;
- the lot.

The teams placed fifth in the two main round groups were placed in 9th and 10th place, the teams placed in 6th place in 11th and 12th. These places were determined according to the following calculation criteria:
- score
- In the event of a tie, the better goal difference from the preliminary round decided.
- In the event of a tie and an identical goal difference, the higher number of goals scored from the preliminary round decided.
- If a placement according to the above criteria had not been possible, the lot would have decided on the order of placement.
First place entitles you to participate in the 2021 World Cup in Egypt. The 2019 world champion is also directly qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan. The teams in places 2 to 7 are eligible to take part in the Olympic qualifying tournaments that will take place in April 2020.

Germany
For the first time since 2013, a handball World Cup was shown live on free TV in Germany. The two German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF broadcast all games of the German national handball team at this tournament. The ZDF broadcast the final. Eurosport had acquired a sub-license and showed 15 more World Cup games without German participation on free TV.
DOSB New Media GmbH, which operates Sportdeutschland.TV , also received a sub-license . The online sports channel, together with its offshoot Handball-Deutschland.TV, showed all 96 games of the 2019 World Cup live and on demand on the Internet. The matches of the German men's national team took place via the freemium package “Sportdeutschland.TV Plus”. For a fee, fans could watch the entire World Cup, including the German games, live and on demand, free of advertising.
