The 4th men's handball world championship was held from March 1st to March 12th, 1961 in the Federal Republic of Germany . A total of 12 teams competed . World champion was Romania , which after two extra times defeated Czechoslovakia 9: 8 in the final. The Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR competed with one team for the last time.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the teams competed in four groups with three teams each. The two best placed in each group qualified for the main round, the third placed were eliminated.
