Cornel Oțelea (born November 19, 1940 in Șeica Mare ) is a former Romanian handball player , coach and sports official.

Life

Oțelea was one of the most important Romanian handball players. At school he first played volleyball and then switched to handball. Oțelea was a player and coach at Steaua Bucharest and the Romanian national team. As a player, Oțelea was used at five world championships and won the world title three times.

In 1959 the with the team at the picked field handball World Cup second place and then won with the team at the World Handball Championship in 1961 , the World Handball Championship in 1964 and in the World Handball Championship in 1970 for the world title. At the handball world championship in 1967 , he finished third. In the meantime, he won the European Cup as captain with his club Steaua Bucharest in the 1967/68 season .

He was also successful as a trainer. Steaua Bucharest won the European Cup for the second time with him in the 1976/77 season . The Romanian national team took third place at the 1990 World Handball Championship . He later also coached the Romanian women's national team, which finished seventh at the 2004 European Championships .

As a sports official, Oțelea was President of Steaua Bucharest from 1983 to 1984 and 1991 to 1997. In the meantime, the later brigadier general also headed military sports. From 1993 to 1995 he was also the President of the Romanian Handball Federation and a member of the National Olympic Committee and the Sports Committee.

In 2009 Oțelea received the medal "Meritul Sportiv cl. Ia".
