The 7th men's handball world championship took place in France from February 26 to March 8, 1970 . A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament. Romania secured the world championship title , which won the final with 13:12 after the second extra time against the GDR team . The team from the Federal Republic of Germany finished fifth.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the teams competed in four groups with four teams each. The two best placed in each group qualified for the main round, the third placed played in a group for places 9 to 12, the fourth placed were eliminated.

The two best-placed teams in each preliminary group reached the main round, which was held as the quarter-finals. The teams from groups A and C or B and D played against each other in crossover games (second in one group against winners in the other group). The respective winners reached the semi-finals, the losers played in the placement round for places 5 to 8.
