Ștefan Birtalan (born September 25, 1948 in Zalau ) is a former Romanian handball player and coach.

Career

Birtalan lived in Zalau for the first ten years of his life and then moved to Jibou . Here he joined his first handball club, Rapid CFR Jibou, in 1964. In 1967 he moved to Minerul Baia Mare and ran from 1970 for the Romanian top club Steaua Bucharest . With Steaua Bucharest, the backcourt player won the European Cup and various national titles in 1977 . In 1985 he became player-coach Italy, where he spent a year in Florence. In the last game of the season he managed to score 34 out of 39 goals.

Birtalan then ended his career and moved to the coaching team of Steaua Bucharest, where he was head coach from 1991 to 1994. In parallel he coached the Romanian youth team between 1986 and 1992 and the Romanian national team from 1993 to 1994. From 1995 Birtalan coached the Qatari national team for four years. In 1999 he returned to the Steaua coaching bench. In 2002 Birtalan had to quit his coaching job due to a hepatitis C disease .

Birtalan was a member of the Romanian national team . With Romania he won the World Cup in 1970 and 1974 . At the 1974 World Cup, he was also the tournament's top scorer with 43 goals. Furthermore, Birtalan took part in the Olympic Games three times, in which he won the silver medal in 1976 and the bronze medal in 1972 and 1980 . At the 1976 Olympic Games, he also won the top scorer's crown.
