The 8th men's handball world championship took place from February 28 to March 10, 1974 in the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

16 teams took part in the tournament. As in the 1970 World Cup, defending champion Romania and second, as in 1970, the GDR team .

In the preliminary round, the teams competed in four groups with four teams each. The two best placed in each group qualified for the main round, the third placed played in a group for places 9 to 12, the fourth placed were eliminated.
