After his active career he returned to Mostar, where Velez Mostar was his first coaching station. After he coached Mehanika Metković, he moved to the second division VfL Bad Schwartau in 1989 , with whom he rose immediately. Then his next station was the SG Flensburg-Handewitt , with which he also rose to the Bundesliga. Between 1993 and 2008 he trained with THW Kiel , with whom he celebrated his greatest successes. On June 25, 2008, the contract between THW Kiel and Zvonimir Serdarušić, which ran until June 30, 2009, was terminated by mutual agreement. With eleven championships Serdarušić is the most successful coach in the history of the handball Bundesliga. For the 2009 season he wanted to continue his coaching career with the Rhein-Neckar Löwen , but asked on February 25, 2009 for health reasons to terminate his contract. In July 2009 he signed a four-year contract as coach of the Slovenian national team. After various disputes, he resigned from his position as national coach in October 2010. Just a month later, he also stopped working for the Slovenian club RK Celje , although he had only taken over the coaching position there during the course of the year. From September to December 2013 he worked as a consultant for the French first division club Pays d'Aix UC . In February 2014 he took over the coaching position there. From July 2015 he coached Paris Saint-Germain . His contract expired in the summer of 2018 and he was replaced by Raúl González .

Fraud allegations

Since 2009 Serdarušić has been confronted with allegations of having participated in match manipulation through referee bribery while he was a coach at THW Kiel. In January 2010, the Kiel public prosecutor brought charges on charges of jointly committed fraud and aiding and abetting of embezzlement. The district court opened the main proceedings in January 2011, but assessed the accused behavior, contrary to the indictment ( Section 207 Paragraph 2 No. 3 StPO), as a jointly committed bribery in business dealings ( Section 299 StGB). On January 26, 2012 Serdarušić was acquitted on all counts by the Kiel Regional Court .
