The DHB-Pokal is the most important German handball cup competition for club teams. It is organized annually by the League Association of the Handball Bundesliga (HBL). The eponymous German Handball Federation (DHB) was the organizer of the competition until the 1990s . The name was kept for the sake of tradition.

The FDGB Cup was held in the GDR until 1991 .

mode

In addition to the ongoing games in the handball leagues, the cup competition is contested in the elimination process. All Bundesliga clubs (1st and 2nd league) from the previous season take part, the other clubs qualify via the regional cup competitions.

The DHB Cup was played in a total of seven consecutive knockout rounds until 2012/13, with the final being the last. Until 2011/12, all 18 current teams in the 1st Bundesliga, as well as individual lower-class clubs, received a bye in the first round. In the 2012/13 competition, the Bundesliga clubs did not enter until the third round. After reducing the number of participating clubs, there was one less round in 2013/14 and 2014/15. Only the first six of the Bundesliga preseason received a bye for the first round.

Since the 2015/16 cup round, the first round with 64 teams including all Bundesliga clubs has been carried out in a new form: four teams each contest a small tournament with semi-finals and finals in the hall of one of the lower-class teams, the winner goes to the second round. For the drawing of the group division, the clubs are divided into lottery pots according to their league membership and placement in the preseason.

The DHB Cup winner was entitled to participate in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the following season until 2011 and has been participating in the EHF Cup since 2012 after the European Cup reform. In addition, the current DHB Cup winner will play against the German champions for the HBL Supercup at the beginning of the following season .

Finals

From 1981 to 1992 the final of the DHB Cup with a return leg was held in the respective home halls of the finalists. In 1993 the German Handball Federation decided to hold a final weekend ( Final Four ). The winners of the quarter-finals take part in the Final Four and determine the DHB Cup winner, with the two semi-finals being played on a Saturday and the final on the Sunday immediately following. The first edition of the Final Four was held in Frankfurt am Main, and Hamburg has been the regular venue since 1994. The tournament was held in the Sporthalle Hamburg until 2002, and since then in the Barclaycard Arena Hamburg. In the multifunctional arena, the Final Four developed into an event and the cup competition became more attractive for clubs and visitors. The Barclaycard Arena Hamburg is now sold out on the final weekends, so that over 25,000 spectators follow the games live.

The first title sponsor of the event was Hamburger Sparkasse , from 2005 to 2007 the weekend was held under the name Haspa Final Four . In 2008 Lufthansa took over the title sponsorship from Hamburger Sparkasse. Until 2013 the tournament was called the Lufthansa Final Four , in 2014 the final round took place without a title sponsor. The grocery chain Rewe has been the title sponsor since 2015 . The contract initially ran until 2017 and was then extended to 2020.

In 2005, a game for 3rd place was played for the first time, as there was a possibility that both finalists, SG Flensburg-Handewitt and THW Kiel, qualify for the Champions League via the handball Bundesliga . Before the final on Sunday, HSG Nordhorn won against Frisch Auf Göppingen and qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The same thing happened again in 2010, when TuS N-Lübbecke prevailed against VfL Gummersbach .

DHB cup winner

Between 1998 and 2000, THW Kiel was the first club in Germany to win the DHB Cup three times in a row. Then the SG Flensburg-Handewitt succeeded from 2003 to 2005 and again the THW Kiel from 2007 to 2009 and from 2011 to 2013.
