The maximum capacity of the hall is 16,000 visitors, at sporting events 13,000 due to the elimination of the indoor spaces. The construction costs amounted to around 83 million euros . The construction of the arena was financed by the Finnish entrepreneur Harry Harkimo and the City of Hamburg, who sold the property to Harkimo for the symbolic price of one mark and as a preparatory measure for 12.38 million marks (about 6.33 million euros) Improved the transport infrastructure and had a soil remediation carried out for 5 million marks (around 2.56 million euros) . use

The Barclaycard Arena served the Hamburg Freezers ice hockey team and the HSV Hamburg handball team as the venue for their home games from 2002 to 2016 . The annual Final Four of the DHB Cup takes place here and in 2007 the arena was one of the venues for the handball world championship . On November 16, 2005, November 13, 2009 and November 2, 2012, World Wrestling Entertainment made a guest appearance with the “Survivor Series Tour” in the arena. The first event was rather poorly attended and the latter was almost sold out with 14,000 spectators. Concerts from all kinds of music are also held regularly in the hall. On April 22nd and 23rd, 2017, the final of the Spring Split 2017 of the European League of Legends Championship Series took place in the Barclaycard Arena . In 2017 the hall was the venue for the women's handball world championship and in 2019 the men's handball world championship . During the entire ice hockey season there was an ice rink inside. For concerts, handball games and other events that did not require an ice surface, these were covered with insulating panels within a short time.

For 26 April 2020 is Bundesliga game of the basketball team of the Hamburg Towers against Bayern Munich scheduled in the arena. The club wants to give a larger number of spectators the opportunity to see the towers live, as the Edel-optics.de arena only offers 3400 seats. It is hoped that 10,000 or more spectators will come to the game with the well-known opponent. According to the club, around 8,000 tickets for the game had been sold in early January of that year.

history

There was a decade-long dispute about the location, concept, operator and implementation. In 1997, a landfill site in the Altona Volkspark was chosen as the arena location , which is located above the HERA particle accelerator . The foundation stone for the arena was laid on June 13, 2001. The arena was officially named on November 8, 2001 after the Norwegian ferry company Color Line . In March 2002 the topping-out ceremony was celebrated and on November 8, 2002 the Color Line Arena was inaugurated with a concert by Wonderwall , Sasha and Phil Collins . Udo Lindenberg celebrated his 30th stage anniversary in the arena on February 13, 2004 with his panic orchestra. A double DVD of this concert has been released. The Böhsen Onkelz recorded the double CD "Live in Hamburg" in the sold-out hall on October 5, 2004, documenting their farewell tour. The concert was also the band's last indoor concert. In April 2005 the builder of the hall, the Finn Harry Harkimo, sold the hall to the also Finnish media group Rautakirja. In November 2007, the Los Angeles-based Anschutz Entertainment Group became the new owner. On April 13, 2010 the Anschutz Entertainment Group and Telefónica Germany announced the renaming of the arena to O 2 World Hamburg . She was so after the O 2 World Berlin , the second after the mobile brand O 2 named event hall in Germany and the fifth in Europe. The partnership between the two companies was originally planned for ten years, but O 2 announced the premature end of its commitment on June 30, 2015 in Hamburg and Berlin. On July 1, 2015, Barclays became a name sponsor for ten years and the arena has been called Barclaycard Arena ever since.

In October 2018, the 15 millionth visitor since the opening was welcomed to a concert by Andreas Gabalier in the arena . In addition to a bouquet of flowers, the winner and her daughter also had a personal meeting with the Austrian singer.
