The Color Line is a Norwegian shipping company , which operates four ferry routes and seven ships. It was created in October 1990 through the merger of Line and Norway Line . In December 1990 Color Line bought the Fred ferry company . Olsen Lines . In October 1996 Color Line took over the route rights of the Larvik Line ( Larvik - Frederikshavn ) and chartered the ferry Peter Wessel . In 1999 Color Line took over the Strömstad - Sandefjord route from Scandi Line . Color Line AS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Color Group ASA holding , the sole owner is Olav Nils Sunde.

In 2016, Color Line carried 3.85 million passengers on four routes with six ferries, 1.1 million of them on the Kiel – Oslo route. A total of 913,676 cars and 175,680 12-m units were transported in freight transport (trucks). After 2014, 2016 saw a profit of 46 million euros for the first time with sales of 534 million euros.

Color Line is the namesake of the Color Line stadium in Ålesund .

history

1990s

In October 1990, Jahre Line and Norway Line merged to form Color Line. Two months later, in December 1990, Color Line took over the ferry operations and the ships ( Bolero , Borgen , Bayard ) of Fred. Olsen Lines . The ships were renamed Jupiter , Skagen and Christian IV . The routes Hirtshals - Kristiansand and Hirtshals - Oslo expanded the route network. In the winter of 1991/1992, the Prinsesse Ragnhild ferry between Kiel and Oslo was rebuilt in Cadiz and extended by 30 meters.

After the Estonia sank in 1994, all Color Line ships were equipped with transverse bulkheads on the car decks in May 1996.

In October 1996 Color Line bought the route rights from Frederikshavn to Larvik and Moss from Larvik Line and chartered the ship Peter Wessel . In return, Larvik Scandi Line Holding acquired the majority of shares in Color Line AS from Skaugen Shipping AS. In September 1998 Color Line took over Scandi Line with the ships Sandefjord , Bohus and Color Viking . In November 1998, Olav Nils Sunde bought all shares previously in free float and thus became 100 percent owner of Color Line. The Color Line has not been traded on the stock exchange since then. A month later, the route from Bergen , Haugesund and Stavanger to Newcastle and the associated ship Color Viking were ceded to the Fjord Line .

On July 7, 1999, a fire broke out in the engine room of the Prinsesse Ragnhild near Gothenburg on the way from Kiel to Oslo . All passengers were successfully evacuated. After a visit to the shipyard at Blohm + Voss , the ship was put back into service in early September 1999. About a week later, on July 15, 1999, Crown Prince Harald touched the ground in the Oslofjord . The ship was brought to the Nordseewerke shipyard in Emden for inspection . After the accidents between the two ships, ferry traffic between Kiel and Oslo was interrupted for the first time since 1961. On July 20, 1999, the Kronprins Harald resumed service.

2000-2005

On December 16, 2002, Color Line ordered the Color Fantasy from Kværner Masa Yards in Turku , which, according to Color Line, is “the world's largest cruise ship with a car deck”. Furthermore, Color Line chartered the Color Traveler in March 2004 and opened a freight route between Hirtshals and Larvik. The Color Fantasy was delivered in December 2004. On December 10, 2004, the ship was christened in Oslo and began its maiden voyage to Kiel. The Color Fantasy sails under the label "Color Line Cruises ".

The Skagen , most recently a replacement ship, was sold to the Egyptian shipping company El Salam Shipping in April 2005 . On May 19, 2005, she left the port of Sandefjord under the name Fedra . However, it did not keep this name for long, as it was sold on to Arab Bridge Maritime Co. in Aqaba (Jordan) in October 2005 .

On April 27, 2005, the new route Hirtshals – Stavanger – Bergen was opened, which was served with the Prinsesse Ragnhild .

The largely identical sister ship of Color Fantasy , the Color Magic , was ordered on May 27, 2005.

On August 24, 2005, there was a fire in the engine room of Christian IV when the ferry was traveling four nautical miles west of the island of Oksøy south of Kristiansand on Norwegian territory from Hirtshals. There was no danger to the 347 passengers or crew. The cause was obviously a broken fuel line. After repair work, the ferry was able to resume operations on August 25, 2005.

From September 1, 2005, Color Line will charge fuel surcharges for all trips on their ships. The amount of the surcharge depends on the length of the route. The reason for the fuel surcharge was the steep rise in crude oil prices at the time.

2006

In April 2006 the timetable was modified. The Color Festival now served the route Frederikshavn - Oslo as a direct competitor to the Stena Line , while the Peter Wessel from now on served Larvik from Hirtshals.

On August 23, 2006, the Norwegian competition authority announced that it would not initiate proceedings against the ferry company Color Line for abuse of its dominant position. This was previously requested by the competitor Fjord Line, as they suspected price dumping on the Hirtshals – Stavanger – Bergen route newly opened by Color Line in 2005. Checks of the revenues and costs on the route between May 1, 2005 and April 30, 2006 had not given any indications of price dumping, the authority announced.

In December 2006 the chartered ship Color Traveler was returned to the owner, Rederi AB Gotland , and renamed Thjelvar . This step was the first preparation for the introduction of the Superspeed ferries in December 2007 and April 2008.

2007

On January 22nd, 2007 the ferry Kronprins Harald was sold to Irish Ferries . In February 2007 the ferry was transferred to the new owner. The ship was chartered back by Color Line by means of a bareboat charter until the Color Magic was delivered . Irish Continental Line Ltd took over the ferry in September 2007 and renamed it Oscar Wilde .

Color Magic was christened on September 15, 2007 in Kiel. The godmother was the actress Veronica Ferres .

On October 19, 2007, Color Line signed a contract with the Italian shipping company MSC ( Mediterranean Shipping Company ) for the sale of Peter Wessel . The purchase price was EUR 25 million, around NOK 200 million. The new area of operation of the Peter Wessel , which has been serving between Denmark and Larvik in Norway since 1984, is the Mediterranean . On November 13, 2007, Color Line announced the sale of the Silvia Ana L to the Argentine shipping company Buquebus for USD 16 million. The ship has been connecting the two capitals Buenos Aires ( Argentina ) and Montevideo ( Uruguay ) since December 20, 2007 .

On November 21, 2007, Color Line announced that it had sold Color Festival to Medinvest SpA ( Corsica Ferries ) for approx. EUR 49 million . Color Line thus ceased operations on the Frederikshavn – Oslo route and left Frederikshavn completely. The Prinsesse Ragnhild was deployed on the Hirtshals – Oslo route from the turn of the year 2007/2008. The Hirtshals – Stavanger – Bergen route, which had been operated by the Prinsesse Ragnhild until then , was also discontinued due to environmental taxes to be paid in Norway in the future, as two Norwegian ports were called at Stavanger and Bergen.

In December 2007 the SuperSpeed 1 started service between Hirtshals and Kristiansand. The Christian IV switched to the route between Hirtshals and Larvik until the SuperSpeed 2 was commissioned . The Peter Wessel was handed over to MSC and used as SNAV Toscana for the Italian shipping company SNAV. At 211 meters, the new SuperSpeed ships are considerably larger than the previous ferries Christian IV (153.4 meters) and Peter Wessel (168.5 meters). They are 27-30 knots fast and significantly reduce travel time on the route. They offer space for 1,800 passengers and 2,000 lane meters for rolling cargo or 700 cars.

2008-2016

The Hirtshals – Oslo route, which had only been served by the Prinsesse Ragnhild since January 2008 , was also discontinued on May 6, 2008, and the Prinsesse Ragnhild was to be sold. The main reason for this was the poor financial development on this route. Around 300 Color-Line employees were affected by the abandonment of the route. In April 2008 the SuperSpeed 2 was put into service on the Hirtshals - Larvik route. The Christian IV was sold to the Finnish shipping company Stella Lines , where it was renamed Julia . On September 3, 2008, Color Line announced that it had sold Prinsesse Ragnhild to the US shipping company Celebration Cruise Holdings Inc. for 23 million euros . It operated this from March 2009 between Florida ( Palm Beach ) and the Bahamas ( Freeport ) as the Bahamas Celebration .

Due to stricter environmental regulations from 2015, the ferries Superspeed 1 , Superspeed 2 , Color Fantasy and Color Magic were equipped with scrubbers in 2014 and 2015 . Since this installation is no longer worthwhile due to the age of the Bohus and Color Viking ferries , they have been operated purely with marine diesel oil , which has a lower sulfur content than heavy oil, since January 1, 2015 .

As of 2017

In 2019, the Bohus on the Strömstad – Sandefjord route was replaced by the new Color Hybrid . The ship is 160 meters long and has a capacity of 2000 passengers and 500 cars. The plug-in hybrid ferry is equipped with diesel generators and electric motors for propulsion. In addition, Fjord Line has also been operating a ship on the Sandefjord – Strömstad route since June 2014, which is why the new building is urgently needed.

Due to the increasing demand in freight traffic on the Kiel – Oslo route, the newly acquired freight ferry Color Carrier has been used as the third ship since January 10, 2019 . There are also plans to build a cruise ship.

Due to the progressive spread of the corona virus , only cargo was transported on the Kiel – Oslo route at times. The two RoPax ferries used on the route were temporarily taken out of service and around 2000 employees were on leave from the second half of March 2020. The Color Fantasy resumed traffic in mid-June and the Color Magic at the end of June. Initially, however, no passengers were carried. Color Line returned to the regular schedule on July 15, 2020. Due to the increasing number of illnesses in Germany, no more German passengers were taken to Oslo from August 28, 2020.
