Gleichberg

The cargo ships of the type RO 15 series are Ro-Ro ships from the Mathias Thesen shipyard in Wismar .

history

The series was manufactured in five units from 1981 to 1985.

Gleichberg

The first ship in the series was the Gleichberg with hull number 150, launched on October 24, 1981 and handed over to the Deutsche Seereederei on July 27, 1982. The Gleichberg was launched on August 1, 1982 with a full load of trucks and spare parts from Rostock on its maiden voyage from with destination Aqaba in Jordan on the Red Sea . On August 13, 1982 at 3.13 a.m. local time, the ship ran at a speed of 18.5  knots on a coral reef in the Strait of Tiran ( 27 ° 59 ′ 15 ″  N , 34 ° 27 ′ 12 ″  E ) . A total power failure was the result. This maritime disaster led to a later determination by the Seekammer by the bad board climate in wax process and by dictatorial habits of the captain. Attempts to rescue three DSR ships in the vicinity failed. Only three salvage tugs succeeded on August 20, 1982 at 7.28 a.m. to bring the 30-meter long ship, which was stuck on the coral bed, into the open water. It was towed to Dubrovnik for repairs. A renovation took place in September 1984. The front bulwark had to be raised because the command bridge, which was arranged far forward, proved to be disadvantageous when crossing the Atlantic. By 1989, the GDR People's Navy had registered the ship as an auxiliary mine-layer and transport ship in the event of mobilization. The ship was renamed the City of Dublin in 1991 . After further renaming in 1994 back to the name Gleichberg and 2000 in Prerow .

Conversion of the Gleichberg to the Ile de Re cable layer

The Prerow was sold in 2002, renamed Ile de Re and converted into a cable layer in Poland, with the total length increasing to 143.40 meters. The measurement rose to 14,091 GRT, the load capacity was reduced to 4,500 tdw. Since then, the ship has been sailing under the French flag with its home port of Marseille and is also in service in 2016.

Auersberg

On August 21, 1982 the Auersberg was launched. She was delivered on June 23, 1983. In 1999 it was renamed Pasewalk and from 2005 it was in service as the Caribbean Carrier . The Caribbean carrier arrived in Alang on January 6, 2011 to be demolished.

Kahleberg

The last ship of the trio was the Kahleberg, launched on November 23, 1982 and delivered on October 31, 1983 . The ship was built under the hull number 152. It was 1992 RoPax - Ferry rebuilt, with the length rose to 140.10 meters. The new measurement was 10,271 GRT, the load capacity was reduced to 2,685 tons. Since 2005 the ship has been called RG 1 . As of February 18, 2013, it was demolished by the ship scrapping company Fornaes Shipbreaking in Grenå.

Tutova

On August 31, 1983, the Ritzberg was launched. She was delivered on October 31, 1984 under the name Tutova . It was later used for the Color Line as Octogon 3 , among other things . In 2010 it was scrapped as Fast Independence in Aliaga.

Tuzla

On November 29, 1983, the Tuzla , which was initially built under the name Siegelberg , was launched. She was delivered on April 9, 1985. The ship was also converted into a cable lay in 2001 at Remontowa in Gdansk.

Ship description

A type RO 15 in the Rostock overseas port

The ship type RO-15 was a new development and the Gleichberg was the first self-build of this type. The ships of this series were intended for traffic on short routes, but could also be used in larger shipping areas and were suitable for the passages of the Kiel Canal and the Suez Canal . The overall length was 138.50 m and the width on the frames 20.50 m and the freeboard draft 7.23 m. The ships were measured with 4,692 GRT / 1,895 NRT and had a deadweight of 6,760 dwt.

The series of ships was built as an open deck without jump and bay with a forward superstructure with a bridge, living and service rooms and aft machinery as a twin screwdriver with a bulbous bow . The fully welded ship consisted mainly of high-strength steel. In front of the engine room, side tanks were arranged over the entire length of the hold between the double floor and the second deck or the suspended deck, which resulted in a smooth hold wall. 3 m high bulwarks were put on between the front structure and the aft machine shafts .

The ships were propelled by two 5,295 kW four-stroke diesel engines of the type 12 VD 48/42 AI-2, which were produced by the manufacturer VEB Maschinenbau Halberstadt, and which acted on the two four -bladed variable pitch propellers via spur gears . Two transverse thrusters improved maneuverability. Two shaft generators with 800 kVA each  and two SKL 6VD26 / 20 Al-2 diesel generators with 662 kW power / 750 kVA apparent power at 1,000 rpm were installed to generate electricity . An emergency diesel generator with an output of 270 kW was available for the emergency power supply. The machine system was designed for 24 hours watch-free operation. The continuous work of the two main engines as well as the numerous auxiliary drives was observed and recorded in the soundproof and air-conditioned engine control room .

A passive roll damping system , the effect of which was modeled in a test institute of the GDR shipbuilding, guaranteed favorable sea behavior even in loading cases with higher initial stability .

The series had a loading space of 1,087 lane meters for 167 40 'trailers with connections for 12  refrigerated containers or 475 cars. The accommodations were set up for the crew (27 seafarers and 6 apprentices) and 12 driver seats in the comfortable deckhouse on the foredeck . As rescue means two were motor lifeboats for 50 people and two auto mixing inflatable life rafts for 20 and 12 people present.
