The Color Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid - ferry the Norwegian ferry company Color Line . It offers space for up to 2000 passengers and 500 cars and is currently (as of August 2019) the largest plug-in hybrid ship worldwide. The Color Hybrid is around 160 meters long and 27 meters wide. It has been in service between Sandefjord in Norway and Strömstad in Sweden since August .
history
Plans for a new building for the Sandefjord - Strömstad route were announced in 2012. The ship was ordered from the Ulstein Group at the beginning of 2017 with delivery planned for 2019 . The construction of the ship designed by the Fosen shipyard began with the first steel cut on July 14, 2017. The keel was laid in the Crist shipyard in Gdynia , Poland on April 16, 2018, and the shell was launched on October 30, 2018. The ship was then towed for equipment to Ulstein Verft in Ulsteinvik , Norway , and dried out again here. On April 14, 2019, the new building was pulled out of the flooded building dock. The ship was completed and delivered on August 1, 2019. Since August 16, 2019, it has been in service between Sandefjord and Strömstad, where it replaced die and Bohus . She was baptized in Sandefjord on August 23, 2019.
The ship received the “Next Generation Ship Award” from the Norwegian trade fair Nor-Shipping in 2017 and “Ship of the Year” in 2019 from the Norwegian trade journal Skipsrevyen.
technology
The drive concept consists of a combination of diesel-mechanical and diesel-electric systems. The ship can also be powered purely electrically for a limited time by means of additionally built-in accumulators.
As drive motors act four Rolls-Royce - diesel engines of the type Bergen B33: 45L: Two six-cylinder engines , each with 3,600 kW power and two nine-cylinder engines kW each with 5400 performance. The motors act on two variable pitch propellers via reduction gears . Two of the engines also drive a generator each to generate electricity. A Caterpillar emergency generator of the type C32 was also installed.
The ship is equipped with several bow and stern thrusters .
The batteries produced by Siemens have a total capacity of 5 MWh , weigh a total of 65 tons and can be recharged within an hour via a fast charging station on the quay in Sandefjord. They provide enough energy for around 60 minutes of purely electric travel and maneuvering at a speed of up to 12 knots - intended primarily for sailing in the area and port operations. This reduces nitrogen oxide emissions in the port to zero and carbon dioxide emissions by 33 percent compared to a ferry of a similar size with a diesel drive.
A heat storage system, in this case a waste heat recovery , stores the otherwise unused waste heat from the engines during diesel operation for further use. The heat storage capacity is also 5 MWh and feeds the on-board heating and a greenhouse in which various types of vegetables and herbs are grown. During construction, special attention was paid to the ecological footprint : According to this, over 70 percent of the suppliers come from Norway. The total consumption of fossil fuels is reduced by more than 20 percent due to the electric drive and the more efficient use of waste heat.
The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice ( ice class 1B).
