Nine cylinder engine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The nine-cylinder engine , just nine cylinder , is a rare type of reciprocating - combustion engines . It is available as an in- line engine - then only as a two - stroke diesel engine , and as a radial engine - usually petrol engines . The in-line diesel engines are usually water-cooled , while the radial engines are air-cooled .

Types

In-line engine

Inline engines with nine cylinders, practically exclusively as two-stroke diesel engines , are used to propel ships. Well-known manufacturers of such marine diesel engines are Sulzer AG in Switzerland and MAN Diesel & Turbo ( B&W brand ) and their licensees, today mostly Korean and Chinese shipyards.

Radial engine

See also the main article radial engine .

As early as the First World War , many types of aircraft were fitted with air-cooled nine-cylinder rotary engines in which the crankcase , cylinder and propeller rotated around the rigid crankshaft . Nine-cylinder radial engines of conventional design were used as aircraft engines for a long time because they offered a comparatively high engine output. The structure ( valve control with cam drum , crankshaft with a main connecting rod and eight auxiliary connecting rods) and thus maintenance is more complex than with in-line engines.

Constructive features

The moderate running smoothness of nine-cylinder in-line engines, which is also one of the reasons for their almost complete lack of use in vehicle construction, is the result of the odd-numbered crank offset, similar to that of five-cylinder engines. Additional difficulties arise in the manufacture of the mechanical core components (crankshaft in a nine-cylinder in-line engine or cylinder block and connection points of the secondary connecting rods to the main connecting rod in a nine-cylinder radial engine) from the unusual divisibility of the full circle angle by nine (360 °: 9 = 40 °) .

In the staggered one behind the other - for cooling reasons - air-cooled eighteen-cylinder engines were also created from two nine-stars.

Trivia

The fascination of nine-cylinder radial engines motivated individual motor vehicle hobby builders to choose unusual installation locations for aircraft engines. In the 2000s, for example, a Goggomobil and a motorcycle with nine-cylinder radial aircraft engines of Russian design with around 700 hp were created.
