The Ulstein Group ASA is a shipbuilding company in the Norwegian municipality of Ulsteinvik in Fylke Møre og Romsdal .

history

The company was founded in 1917 by Martin Ulstein under the name "Ulstein mek. Verksted". Since the 1960s, Ulstein has developed numerous successful ship designs for the growing North Sea oil industry with the UT series (UT = Ulstein Trading). In 1999 Vickers acquired a large part of the Ulstein Group, including the parts of the company for ship design and equipment, and integrated it as Vickers Ulstein Marine System. In 1999, Vickers was taken over by Rolls-Royce, where UT ship designs and parts packages are sold today. After the Vickers takeover, the Ulstein family kept the shipyard and again developed their own designs. The company is still family-owned to this day and is currently managed by Gunvor Ulstein and Tore Ulstein in the third generation. The Ulstein Group has around 600 employees in nine countries. The company is headquartered in Ulsteinvik and the main line of business is the construction of supply ships , buoy layers and special ships for research at the Ulstein shipyard. The Hurtigruten ships Polarlys and Midnatsol are among the around 300 ships built by Ulstein Werft to date .
