The Polarlys ( Norwegian for " Northern Lights " ) is a passenger and ro-ro ship of the Hurtigruten ASA , which is used on the Hurtigruten on the coast of Norway in regular services. There had been two other ships with this name before. Like the Nordlys and the Midnatsol , the Polarlys is named after a natural phenomenon .
history
Construction and commissioning
On June 14, 1994, the Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap ASA shipping company and the Ulstein Verft AS shipyard signed a contract to build a new ship that was to be used on the Hurtigruten . The hull was as hull number 223 at the Ulstein Verft in Ulsteinvik placed on 1 February 1995 in Kiel. The launch took place on November 4, 1995 and on March 23, 1996 the ship could be delivered. On the same day, the lawyer and politician Ann Kristin Olsen named the ship Polarlys.
commitment
Immediately after commissioning, the Polarlys took a short cruise to the Shetland and the Orkney Islands . On April 17, 1996, the ship took up the line service on the Hurtigruten and replaced the Nordstjernen .
Machine system and drive
The Polarlys is equipped with a diesel-mechanical drive system. It consists of two "father-and-son" drive groups; each includes two nine-cylinder in-line diesel engines of the type Ulstein-Bergen BRM-9 ("father", installed in the forward direction) or Ulstein-Bergen KRG-9 ("son", installed aft in the direction of travel). The nominal speed of the motors is 750 / min. They work together via centrally arranged reduction gears ("double motor gears") of the type Volda ACG1500 / 900HV and shaft systems on one controllable pitch propeller each. The ship's generators ( shaft generators ) are directly coupled to the main engines and manufactured by Leroy Somer. They provide 1,600 kW ("father" side, main generator) or 1,550 kW ("son" side, auxiliary generator). The shipyard stated the pure propulsion power of the ship to be 3,600 kW / propeller (approx. 4,500 PS / propeller). Two transverse thruster systems in the bow, each with an output of 600 kW (approx. 815 HP) and one in the stern with an output of 880 kW (approx. 1,200 HP) serve as maneuvering aids.
Furnishing
The Polarlys has seven decks and can accommodate 619 passengers. There are 473 beds in 225 cabins. The 35 parking spaces for cars on board can be reached via a side loading hatch on board. The interior of the ship is based on the nature of Scandinavia .
The Polarlys has the usual equipment and facilities for a ship of its year of construction and its category. There is a restaurant, bistro, bar as well as lounges and a sauna on board.
