The Richard With is one of the RoPax ships operated by the shipping company Hurtigruten AS , which are used in regular service on the Hurtigruten on the coast of Norway . It is named after the Norwegian captain Richard With , one of the founders of Hurtigruten. With was the first to drive the route from Bergen to Hammerfest during the night. Another Hurtigruten ship had previously carried this name.

history

Construction and commissioning

The Richard With , according to the Kong Harald and Nordlys the third ship of the Hurtigruten AS , which on the Volkswerft Stralsund in Stralsund emerged. She was laid down on March 31, 1992 with hull number 103. The launch took place on February 14, 1993. After completion, the ship was christened Richard With on November 19, 1993 by Åshild Haugan in Stralsund and on November 22, 1993 to the shipping company Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskap A / S (OVDS) delivered.

commitment

At the end of November 1993, the Richard With began scheduled service on the Hurtigruten. At the end of 2002, a group of investors took over the ship, which, however, was still chartered for the OVDS shipping company on the Hurtigruten. Kystruten KS, based in Narvik, has been the owner of Richard With since December 16, 2005 .

incident

On the morning of January 6, 2009, at around 8:20 am , the Richard With was caught by a gust of wind during the scheduled mooring maneuver in the port of Trondheim and pressed with great force against the quay wall of Pier 2. The starboard propeller was damaged and water leaked into the engine room. During the course of the day the ship developed a port side of 15 degrees. All 153 passengers on board were recovered unharmed. The Richard With was first stabilized with bilge pumps and later brought to the GMC Maritime shipyard in Stavanger by two tugs . After a repair in Bremerhaven , the Richard With resumed her liner service from Bergen on April 5, 2009 , after being replaced by the Nordlys .

modernization

In November 2018, the Richard With was docked in the Fosen shipyard for a general overhaul . In a first step, the interior of the ship will be modernized in accordance with the new Hurtigruten standards. In a second step, the drive is to be converted to LNG within the next two years.

Machine system and drive

The diesel-mechanical drive system of Richard With consists of two medium-fast running (speed: 500 / min) six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of the type MaK 6M552C, each of which acts on a KaMeWa adjustable propeller via a reduction gear (Lohmann GCK 755) . At the beginning of 2014, the conventional propeller-rudder arrangement will be replaced by the integrated propeller-rudder system "Promas Lite" from Rolls-Royce as part of modernization measures. The aim is to increase the effectiveness of the propulsion system by 11 to 14 percent at speeds of 15 knots. Two cross-thruster systems are installed in the bow to aid maneuvering . To reduce rolling movements, the Richard With is equipped with a pair of stabilizer fins .

The ship is powered by two wave generators with an electrical output of 2,875 kVA each . The ship also has two 1,500 kVA generators, which are powered by Bergen Diesel KRG-8 diesel engines. The emergency generator has an output of 265 kVA.

Furnishing

The Richard With originally offered space for 691 passengers on seven decks. 460 beds were available in the 227 cabins. There were parking spaces on the ship for 55 cars. After renovations, it currently offers space for 590 passengers, has 223 cabins with 458 beds and parking spaces for 45 cars. The latter can be reached via a ramp on the port side . In addition to a restaurant, there are two bistros as well as lounge and panorama salons on board. In addition, a fitness room, a sauna, a wellness center and two whirlpools are available to passengers.

The interior of the ship is based on the nature of Scandinavia . Numerous pictures on board come from the artists Karl Erik , Eva and Jan Harr from Harstad . The main work on the ship is a representation of the Trollfjord battle on deck 4, which extends almost the entire width of the ship .
