The Nordnorge ( Norwegian for Northern Norway ) is a passenger and ro-ro ship operated by the shipping company Hurtigruten ASA and operates on the Hurtigruten on the coast of Norway on a regular basis. The ship is named after the northernmost part of Norway (officially: Nord-Norge ). She is the fourth ship of the shipping company that bears this name. The first Nordnorge was put into service as early as 1924.

history

Construction and commissioning

The Nordnorge was built at Kværner Ulsteinvik as (Kleven Verft A / S) in Ulsteinvik . The keel was laid on September 8, 1995. On March 19, 1997 the ship was delivered to the shipping company Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskap A / S (OVDS). One day later, the baptism was carried out by the Norwegian politician Sissel Rønbeck .

After a cruise through the North Sea , Nordnorge began regular service on the Bergen - Kirkenes route on April 29, 1997 .

Starting from November 2002 to April 2003 was Nordnorge in the following years during the winter months in the northern hemisphere for expedition cruises in the Antarctic used. In autumn 2004 the Nordnorge covered the distance between Hammerfest ( Norway ) and Ushuaia ( Argentina ) in 43 days. Among other things, several European cities, the Canary Islands , Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires were called.

In the winter half of 2008/09, the Nordnorge was launched due to massive financial problems of the shipping company Hurtigruten ASA and was later chartered out as a hotel ship to Aker Solutions . A general overhaul took place at the Bredo shipyard in Bremerhaven in summer 2009 . On April 1, 2010 she was reintegrated into the liner service on the Norwegian coast.

In 2016, the ship underwent an extensive modernization with a new Arctic design, inspired by the Arctic Sea and the Norwegian coastal landscape. Among other things, the restaurants, the Multe bakery, the reception with expedition leader and shop as well as numerous cabins have been redesigned. Furthermore, all floor coverings were exchanged for safe, noise-absorbing coverings. The Nordnorge has an expedition team that gives lectures in the conference room, accompanies excursions and provides passengers with a lot of interesting information about places and landscapes along the route.

Special occurrences

  • On the night of February 1, 2007, the Nordnorge picked up the passengers of her sister ship Nordkapp , which ran aground off Deception Island in Antarctica on January 30 .
  • On November 23, 2007 the Nordnorge was involved in the rescue of the passengers of the Explorer in the Antarctic .
  • In June 2011 the broadcaster NRK2 reported live for 134 hours of a trip by Nordnorge , which set a record number of viewers in Norway.
  • On November 3, 2014, came before the village Skjervo to a grounding

Machine system and drive

The conventionally designed drive system from Nordnorge consists of two six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of the Krupp 6M552C series , which act on the two KaMeWa variable- pitch propellers via Lohmann Navilus GCK 755HP reduction gears. Power is supplied by two shaft generators, which are supplemented by two additional diesel generators and an emergency generator. To improve the maneuverability at low speeds is Nordnorge with two Brunvoll - transverse thrusters fitted in the bow and stern.

Furnishing

The Nordnorge is approved for a maximum of 590 passengers. It has 476 beds in 211 cabins, three of which are barrier-free. The cabin offer includes 12 suites of different sizes. There are parking spaces for 35 vehicles on the ship. Access to the vehicle deck is via a hydraulically operated ramp on the port side .

The Nordnorge is equipped with the “Torget” restaurant, an a la carte restaurant, a bistro and the Multe bakery with a cafe and ice cream bar. Above the bridge you have a good view of the passing landscapes from a spacious three-sided glass lounge (Explorer Salon) with the panorama bar. The sun deck with protected and heated seating areas is also located on deck 7 . The ship also has a promenade deck, a fitness room, a wellness area with a sauna and two outdoor whirlpools . The ship is equipped with WiFi.
