The Lofoten is a mail and passenger ship operated by the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten AS and operates regular services on the Hurtigruten on the coast of Norway . She has been the oldest ship in the line since the Nordstjernen was decommissioned in March 2012. The Lofoten has a length of 87.4 m, a width of 13.2 m and was measured with 2,621 GT .
history
Construction, commissioning and maintenance
The Lofoten was built with hull number 547 at the A / S Akers mekaniske Verksted shipyard in Oslo and was launched on September 7, 1963. On February 27, 1964 the commissioning took place for the company Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskap A / S (VDS) in Stokmarknes . During the period of use the ownership changed several times.
In addition to the regular shipyard stays, Lofoten was modernized in 1980 and 1985 at the Aalborg shipyard in Denmark. Further modernization and renovation measures followed in 1995 and 2003, although the traditional style was retained. It was placed under monument protection in Norway due to its largely original furnishings, which are dominated by a lot of wood .
As part of a new concept by the Hurtigruten shipping company, which is intended to emphasize the nostalgic character of Lofoten , in 2015 it again received the chimney brand of its original shipping company VDS, which was merged into Hurtigruten AS. The interior fittings are also to be brought into line with the original condition from 1964.
commitment
The Lofoten has been in use on the Hurtigruten since it was commissioned . The ship has been in liner service all year round since the 2010/2011 season. Before that, for almost ten years in the winter half-year it replaced the Nordnorge , which during this time was an expedition ship in the waters of the Antarctic and off Chile . In the summer the Lofoten was used for cruises , including in the area of the eponymous archipelago of the Lofoten , as well as to Svalbard . During its service life, the Lofoten was damaged several times by collisions and grounding.
Shipping companies
- Starting in 1964: VDS
- From January 1988: OVDS
- From September 1988 FFR
- From April 1996: again OVDS
- since March 2006: Hurtigruten AS
Machine system and drive
The Lofoten is powered by a 7-cylinder diesel engine of the type Burmeister & Wain DM 742 VT2BF.90, which develops an output of 2,480 kW (approx. 3,370 hp ) at a speed of 200 rpm and acts on a controllable pitch propeller. In addition, the ship has three main generators and an emergency power generator. In contrast to Nordstjernen , Lofoten still has its original engine, only in 1996 it received a new engine block.
Furnishing
The Lofoten has five decks and is equipped with 155 beds in 63 cabins. The ship is approved for a maximum of 410 passengers. The maximum speed is 16 knots . The Lofoten is the only remaining ship of the "traditional generation" currently operating on the Hurtigrute. Its comfort features cannot be compared with the younger mail ships in the line (machine noise, narrower and simpler cabins), but the feeling of traveling on a “real” mail ship is appreciated by many passengers.
