The motor ship Nordstjernen (dt. Polarstern ) is a listed passenger ship . Until it was decommissioned in 2012, it was the oldest ship of the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten ASA and operated with interruptions from 1956 until the end of March 2012 on the Hurtigrute on the coast of Norway. The Nordstjernen is thus the ship with the longest period of service to date in the Hurtigruten service.

history

predecessor

The predecessor was the steamship Nordstjernen, built in 1937 . This ship sank on the night of September 22, 1954 after a collision with a rock in Raftsund , killing four passengers. These had jumped overboard and swam to the supposedly saving nearby shore. Here, however, they did not succeed in climbing the rocks protruding vertically out of the water.

Construction and commissioning

The Nordstjernen belongs together with the Ragnvald Jarl and Finnmark to three ships of the Hurtigruten new construction program of the postwar period, in the years 1954 to 1956 the shipyard Blohm & Voss in Hamburg were built. The Nordstjernen carries the hull number 787. While the Ragnvald Jarl and Finmark be described as sister ships, the first built different Nordstjernen of this mainly through the midship mounted engine and the Convention therein "traditional" smokestack. The launch took place on October 26, 1955. On February 24, 1956, the ship was delivered to the Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab (BDS) shipping company and then went on its maiden voyage .

commitment

The Nordstjernen was used since its maiden voyage on the Hurtigruten on 1 March 1956 to the year 2012 exclusively with shipping companies Hurtigruten. It was transferred from the shipping company BDS to the shipping company TFDS in 1979 and went to the Hurtigruten Group in March 2007 . The Nordstjernen was last used all year round in liner service. Before that, it was regularly used on the route to Svalbard between 1968 and 1982 and from the mid-1990s in the summer months , and between 1976 and 1979 on the route from Bergen to Lerwick in the Shetlands .

Retirement at Hurtigruten ASA

In October 2011, the shipping company announced that the Nordstjernen would be replaced with the schedule change in spring 2012 by the Finnmarken (2002), which was returning to regular service, and that it would be decommissioned. After its decommissioning it was in the summer of 2012 one last time for Spitsbergen used cruises before the ship was launched for sale.

Further use

In November 2012 the ship was acquired by Vestland Rederi AS . With Bergen , her new home port corresponds to that of her original shipping company BDS. From the end of 2012 to the end of July 2013, the ship was in a shipyard in Gdansk for extensive overhaul work . The Norwegian monument protection authority Riksantikvaren , which placed the ship under protection, contributed 2.5 million Norwegian kroner to the work and accompanied it. The Nordstjernen , as chimney brand now carries its original BDS colors again, took early August 2013 at the Traditional Ship-rise Fjord team in Bergen in part and in future is as a hotel ship and used for charter tours.

Since 2015, Hurtigruten has been using the ship for expedition trips around Svalbard in the summer months .

incident

On the evening of November 11, 2013, the Nordstjernen ran aground in Karmsund near Haugesund . She lay stable on a skerry and initially no water penetrated. The following morning she was successfully towed free and was able to moor in Haugesund. The incident was investigated by the police. During an inspection by the Maritime Administration, it was found that several ballast tanks had holes. The hull and deck had suffered structural damage. A small amount of water flowing into a hold was under control. A representative from the Norwegian Monument Protection Agency said that the agency would participate in the repair work. We are glad that no people were harmed in the incident and that the property damage was not greater. Everything can be repaired. The repairs were carried out at the Westcon shipyard in Ølensvåg and were completed at the end of January 2014.

Machine system and drive

The Nordstjernen was originally equipped with a diesel engine from Burmeister & Wain , which developed about 3,000  hp and powered a four-blade propeller.

In the winter of 1982/83 the ship was modernized at the Mjellem & Karlsen shipyard in Bergen and equipped with an 8-cylinder diesel engine of the MaK 8M453AK type, which acts on a variable-pitch propeller via a reduction gear . Two of the ship's three main generators have now been replaced by new buildings.

Furnishing

Rear view

The ship has been measured with 2,194  GT and was last approved for 410 passengers on normal coastal voyages, and 600 passengers were permitted on direct coastal voyages, i.e. on the Hurtigrute. Initially, like all other Hurtigruten ships of the time, the Nordstjernen was conceived and laid out as a two-class ship. It had 62 beds in 1st class and 130 beds in 2nd class cabins. After the conversion to a one-class ship in 1983, she only had 170 beds. Since another renovation in 2006, she has 62 cabins with a total of 168 beds. During the conversion to a single-class ship, the public areas of the ship were also adapted to the new requirements; the dining rooms were merged and the salons were refurnished. The post office on board was also closed. The equipment and furnishings of the ship have largely been preserved in the traditional style to this day. Two cranes with a load capacity of one ton each and one crane with a load capacity of two tons serve as loading gear . In contrast to the modern ships on the Hurtigrute, the Nordstjernen was no longer able to transport vehicles. Up to the mid-1990s, up to three cars were loaded using the on-board cranes.
