The Karmsund is a strait between the island of Karmøy and the Norwegian mainland at Haugesund . The Karmsund Bridge has been crossing the sound since 1955 .
The waterway along the island of Karmøy from Skudeneshavn in the south to Karmsund is also called Nordvegen ( North Way ) because in ancient times it was the only connection along the coast. From her the country of Norway got its name.
history
In the Viking Age , the Karmsund was the only passage near Haugesund, and was given a key position for the region. The local chief on Avaldsnes sat at a junction with a large hinterland and was able to control all trade between the south and the north. The Karmsund became the nucleus for the power of Harald Hårfagre . There are a number of archaeological sites along the Karmsund that provide insight into this past.
economy
The Karmsund is still an important waterway today, as the sea west of Karmøy is considered difficult to navigate. Industrial companies, shipping companies and ports for fishing and industry are lined up along it. Here are also the three largest power line masts in Norway with a height of 143.5 meters.
Karmsund is also the name of a local newspaper.
