Karmsundbrua is an arch bridge in Norway that connects the island of Karmøy with the mainland in Haugesund ( Rogaland ). The bridge spans the Karmsund and was opened on October 22nd, 1955 by the then Crown Prince Olav . The bridge is 691 meters long with a maximum span of 184 meters.
Initially, the use of the bridge was subject to a toll . The toll station was on the mainland side.
The bridge marked the end of the ferry across the Karmsund (“Salhusferga”), which for many years had linked “town and country”. The ferry was small and with low engine capacity the ferry often had problems reaching the opposite bank due to the strong current in Karmsund.
