Pregler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to the Austrian Food Code , Pregler is a protected name for a fine brandy that meets the following conditions:

  • Usually made exclusively from apples and pears
  • At least 25% apples and 25% pears must be used, pure apple or pear brandies are not permitted
  • The fruit must in East Tyrol come
  • In the event of supply difficulties, the pears can also come from other Austrian regions
  • Distillers who can show that they have traditionally also added plums are still allowed to do so up to a proportion of 25%
  • Added sugar is prohibited
  • Distillation, bottling and labeling may only take place in East Tyrol
  • 100% distillate
  • at least 40 % by volume

The term “Pregler” comes from “Pregeln”, “Prägeln”, “Brägeln”, which means something like roast, simmer, stew; these days, however, this word is rarely used. The term " Brägele " for fried potatoes is common in the Alemannic- speaking area.

Each distillery uses its own apple and pear varieties, which results in the variety of flavors in the individual spirits as well as between the different “Preglers”. Like many other schnapps, the Pregler is said to have beneficial, digestive properties and it is also said to promote sociability.

The 1991 by 20 Osttiroler burners association "Osttiroler Preglerbauern" founded has set itself the goal of leading the centuries-old culture Pregler further and support the torch in marketing.
