Brandy

Brandy made from mash of Portugieser grapes

In Austria we mean by fine spirits spirits consisting of fermented liquids or fermented mash containing sugar or starch saccharified raw materials while maintaining their characteristic flavor distilled were, and the products made from it by reducing the alcohol content with water. A brandy to which up to a third of the alcohol of agricultural origin has been added is now commonly referred to as fruit schnapps.

Products marked with the label “Farmer” or “Land” (for example “Apricot Farmer's Brandy”) are only marketed as fine brandies. A presentation or designation that indicates farm production, such as “from the farmer”, “original farmer schnapps” or the like, must correspond to the facts as references to production by farmers.

In Germany there is no uniform definition for fine spirits.
