Award-winning headquarters of DNV in Høvik on the Oslofjord in Norway with Betongtavlen (1977) .

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) was a classification society established as a foundation in Oslo in 1864 ; the purpose of the company was to protect life, property and the environment. On September 12, 2013, the two previous competitors Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Germanischer Lloyd (GL) merged and merged into the new DNV GL Group . Around 17,000 people are employed at 300 locations, and annual sales are around 2.5 billion euros.

background

The company was divided into three business areas: DNV Maritime and Oil & Gas, DNV Kema and DNV Business Assurance and had branches in more than 100 countries and over 10,000 employees. In the areas of ship classification (around 18% of the global ship fleet), management system certification (more than 80,000 valid certificates, focus on quality management standard ISO 9001 ) and in the field of sustainability services for the energy industry (e.g. the technical monitoring of offshore facilities), DNV was one of the world's leading auditing company.

Ships measured by Det Norske Veritas have the letters NV on the loading lines ( Plimsoll stamp ) amidships.

Merger with GL

At the end of 2012, the two classification societies DNV and Germanischer Lloyd (GL) agreed a merger, according to which the Norwegian DNV Foundation 63.5% and the German investment company Mayfair (as owner of GL) 36.5% of the shares in the new DNV GL Group will hold. This created a very important classification society with a broad portfolio for all areas.

In September 2013 it was announced that the merger of the companies Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and DNV will take effect on September 12, 2013. The antitrust authorities of the four required jurisdictions (South Korea, USA, EU / Norway and China) had approved this merger.

Since then, the combined company has operated as DNV GL . DNV GL describes its position as follows:

We now form the world's largest ship and offshore classification society, the leading technical advisor to the global oil and gas industry, and a leading expert for the energy value chain including renewables and energy efficiency. We've also taken a position as one of the top three certification bodies in the world.
