Akers mekaniske Verksted , sometimes abbreviated as Akers mek. Verksted or Akers Mek. , Akers-mek. or AmV , was a shipyard founded in 1841 in the Norwegian capital Christiania .

history

The company, founded in Fossveien on the Akerselva River in Oslo in 1841 , initially specialized in the manufacture of metal goods. It was not until the move to the new location on the "Holmen" on the west side of the Pipervika in 1854 that ships began to be built. In 1917 the Oslo shipowner took over Fred. Olsen holds a majority stake in the company. The Olsen family held these company shares until the company was dissolved in 1985. By 1930, around 450 steamers were built at the shipyard . The workforce at that time was around 1,500.

In 1956, Nylands mekaniske Verksted was taken over by the purchase of the majority of the shares of A / S Akers mekaniske verksted and later merged with this (today STX Europe ).

Together with other companies, the shipyard was transferred to a shipyard association in 1960, the so-called "Akergruppen". In 1982 the shipyard was closed. In the course of area renovation and urban development measures, the new Aker Brygge district with restaurants, shops, offices and apartments as well as a promenade along the fjord was created while retaining some of the historic shipyard buildings on the former shipyard site .
