Nylands mekaniske sold
Nylands mekaniske verksted was a Norwegian shipyard in Christiania on Grønlandsleiret. In addition to steam ships and steam engines , steam locomotives were also manufactured.
history
Nylands mekaniske verksted was founded in 1854 by Jacob Smith Jarmann and the engineer Prosper Nørbech. From 1857 the workshop moved to the mouth of the Akerselva in Bjørvika , where a large factory building was built on the western bank of the river by 1860. The workshop was operated on this property in Oslo until 1971.
With hull number 4, the world's first special whaling boat was delivered in 1864 . Half of Norway's steamship fleet until 1870 was owned by either Nyland or Akers mek. Verksted built about 50 ships in total. Jarmann retired from the business in 1878.
Nylands mekaniske verksted went bankrupt on April 5, 1879. On May 24, 1881, a new establishment took place as Nylands Verksted .
Around 1900 Nyland was the largest shipyard in Norway with over 1,000 employees. There were two floating docks . Statistisk Sentralbyrå ( German Central Statistical Office ) had 689 employees at Nylands Verksted and 663 employees at Akers mek in 1909 . Verksted .
After 1950 the ships got bigger and bigger and their construction had to be carried out more efficiently. The more than 100 year old production facilities in Bjørvika became too small.
In 1956 Nyland was acquired through the acquisition of the majority of shares from A / S Akers mek. Verksted was taken over and later merged with this (today STX Europe ). Before the merger, the shipyard had built over 350 ships, as well as numerous industrial machines and railroad cars. Of the ships, over 100 were whaling boats and 50 were passenger ships.
In 1967 the Akers factories in Pipervika and Nyland in Bjørvika were put under joint management and the two production sites were named Nyland Vest and Nyland Øst . The old Nylands workshop (Nyland Øst) was closed in 1971. Nylands Verksted was then from 1971 to 1982 the name for Akers verft in Pipervika.
The Oslo Opera House opened on the former factory site in 2008 .
