Norsk Hoved-Jernbane (NHJ) was the official name of the Norwegian railway company , which was colloquially called Hovedbanen because of the first railway line it was built.

history

The company was originally a British / Norwegian consortium in which British and Norwegian shareholders raised half of the construction costs of £ 450,000 . The route was therefore initially given the English name Norwegian Trunk Railway .

The company's shares were put out to tender on September 9, 1850 , and the contract with the British contractual partners was signed on December 17 of the same year. These received preference shares , which the Norwegian government was to pay out on presentation after 100 years. The company's board of directors had six members - three were appointed by the state and three were elected by the holders of preferred shares.

First railway line in Norway

The company built the railway line between Oslo and Eidsvoll via Lørenskog and Dal (not to be confused with the cloakroom that runs roughly parallel ). This was Norway's first public railway line, which opened on September 1, 1854. Formally, the line was a private railway until March 4, 1926 . On that date, NHJ, as Oslo District, became part of Norges Statsbaner .

The construction of the line began on August 8, 1851 with an initial workforce of around 350 workers, by December 1851 the number of workers was increased to 1,400.
