Steam locomotives of the Norwegian railway company Norsk Hoved-Jernbane

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list includes the steam locomotives of the Norwegian railway company Norsk Hoved-Jernbane (NHJ).

Norsk Hoved-Jernbane was Norway's first private railway company. It was also the first company in Norway to use steam locomotives . The first locomotive was delivered to the Hovedbane in 1851 . The numbering was based on the sorting of the locomotive park of the Norges Statsbane (NSB). Both companies worked very closely together, so that the takeover of Hovedbane in 1926 as the Oslo district of NSB was almost only a formality.

As early as the mid-1860s, the standard gauge locomotives from NHJ and NSB were listed in a joint number list. With the merger, no locomotive had to be given a new number.

The two companies began classifying them into series around 1900. NSB used numbers , while NHJ chose letters . The following list shows all locomotives used by NHJ from 1851 to 1927 with the series assignments from 1900 and 1923 as well as the NSB type designations that they received in 1927.
