The Norwegian steam locomotive series NSB Type 32 was built between 1915 and 1921 by Baldwin Locomotive Works , the Vagn- & Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Falun and Hamar Jernstøberi ( German  iron foundry Hamar ) for the Norges Statsbaner (NSB), the state railway company in Norway. The Norsk Hoved-Jernbane (NHJ) also received two locomotives as a second occupation for the D series .

history

The tank locomotives with Heusinger controls were designed for use on the Dovrebane as pushing and tensioning locomotives . It also proved itself for local trains and was therefore used in Oslo , Stavanger , Bergen and Trondheim .

On the Dovrebane, the locomotives in Trondheim, Støren , Drivstua and Dombås were permanently stationed to support the locomotives on the gradients.

In Narvik and on the Ofotbane , the 32b and 32c series locomotives were used for construction trains and only occasionally drove flat trains.

The substructures differed only slightly. The 32b and 32c were slightly longer than the 32a , and there were also differences in the heating surface and the superheater heating surface .

Type 32a

Seven locomotives of this type were built by Hamar Jernstøberi in 1915 . A replica of three machines took place in 1921, these supplied by the Swedish locomotive factory Vagn- & Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Falun .

NHJ D "

Based on the positive experience, reorders were placed with Baldwin in 1917 . The serial numbers 45940 and 45941 were delivered to Norsk Hoved-Jernbane . The NHJ D series was used for the second time with the numbers D13 and 14 . When NHJ was taken over on March 4, 1926 as Oslo district in Norges Statsbaner (NSB), the state railway company in Norway, the two locomotives with the same company numbers were assigned to the 32b series .

Type 32b

Another five Baldwin locomotives were delivered directly to NSB. The serial numbers 45837 and 45839 were delivered in 1917, the three other locomotives with earlier serial numbers from the same order lot did not follow until 1918. Problems with the weight distribution arose with these Baldwin locomotives. The rearmost drive axle had too low an axle load. This problem has been fixed in the deliveries of the 32c .

Type 32c

In 1919 an order for a further six locomotives was placed with Baldwin . As with the 32b , delivery in 1920 and 1921 was not in the order of the serial numbers.

Use and whereabouts

32b 13 and 32b 14 were stationed in Narvik from 1940 to 1941. The locomotives 32b 335 and 32c 390 were mainly used for overhead line revision and repair. In the event of a power failure, they took over the regional trains.

The 32c 384 was the first locomotive to be retired on December 15, 1954. Most of them followed in the years 1955 to 1965. The penultimate locomotive in service was the 32a 290 , which was decommissioned on February 8, 1967, and the last, the 32a 288 , followed on April 21, 1969. It is the only remaining locomotive of this type and exhibited in the locomotive hall of the Norsk Jernbane Museum in Hamar .
