Mountain race Sierra-Montagna 1966
The mountain race Sierra-Montagna 1966 , also Swiss Mountain Grand Prix, Sierre-Montagna-Cran , was a mountain race that was held on August 28, 1966 and was the sixth event of the European mountain championship of the season. At the same time, the race was the eleventh round of the sports car world championship this year.
The race
The 1966 European Hill Climb Championship was held in two racing categories. Sports cars were rated separately from Gran Tursimo vehicles in the championship . The sports car category was characterized by the duel between the German Porsche factory driver Gerhard Mitter and the Italian Ludovico Scarfiotti , who competed for Scuderia Ferrari . While in addition to the Porsche 904/8 Bergspyder also drove a Carrera 6 and a 910 , Scarfiotti relied on the Ferrari Dino models 206S and 206P .
Until the race in Crans-Montana Mitter had been victorious four times; Scarfiotti had won the fourth race of the season in Sestriere . With another success, Mitter was able to ensure a preliminary decision in the championship before the last race on the Gaisberg . The Ferrari driven by Scarfiotti faced several Porsches as opponents. In addition to Mitter, Hans Herrmann was at the start in a works Porsche 910. Joseph Greger , Dieter Spoerry and André Wicky drove 906s; Rudi Lins contested the race with a 904 GTS. The largest displacement car was the Shelby GT350 , which Karl Foitek reported for Peter Schetty . Class winners were raced in no less than 24 racing classes, with all teams having to cover the 11-kilometer route twice. In the European Championship, however, only the participants counted sports car prototypes and the large GT class.
With his overall victory Scarfiotti was able to delay the decision in the European Championship. Adding the two races together, he had a lead of almost four seconds over Gerhard Mitter. Third-placed Hans Herrmann was already half a minute behind at the finish. The best driver who did not drive a Ferrari or a Porsche was the Swiss Denis Borel on an Abarth 1600SP . Borel finished eighth overall, 1: 23,000 minutes behind the winner.
Scarfiotti also set the fastest time on the mountain. He mastered the first section in a time of 6: 29,000 minutes, which corresponds to an average speed of 101,799 km / h.
