Targa Florio 1966
The 50th Targa Florio , also 50 ° Targa Florio, Piccolo Circuito delle Madonie, Sicilia , took place in Sicily on May 8, 1966 and was the fourth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
The 1965 World Sports Car Championship began with two races in the United States . A 24-hour race was held for the first time at Daytona International Speedway . The event ended with the success of Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby in Ford Mk.II . Miles and Ruby also win in the subsequent Sebring 12-hour race , which was part of the world championship 14 times. This time on a Ford X1 Roadster.
The European sports car world championship season began in April with the race in Monza . John Surtees and Mike Parkes won on a plant - Ferrari 330P3 coupe .
The race
Teams, vehicles and drivers
In the 1960s, the race on the public roads in the Sicilian mountains between Cerda and Caltavuturo , the Piccolo circuito delle Madonie , had developed into a confrontation between the Porsche and Ferrari works teams . In 1959 , Porsche celebrated its first victory in a sports car world championship race with Edgar Barth and Wolfgang Seidel at the wheel of a Porsche 718 RSK 1500 . Porsche also won 1960 , Targa Florio 1963 and 1964 . Ferrari won 1961 , 1962 and the previous year .
In 1966 it was no different. The Scuderia team management prepared four cars for training and racing, a 330P3 Spyder and three Dino 206s . Nino Vaccarella and Lorenzo Bandini drove the 330P3 , two of the dinosaurs were entrusted to Jean Guichet , Giancarlo Baghetti , Ludovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes. The third dinosaur was reported by the Scuderia Sant Ambroeus, but was used and looked after by the Scuderia. The drivers were Giampiero Biscaldi and Mario Casoni . The three dinosaurs differ from each other technically. The 2-liter V6 - mid-engine in the car of Scarfiotti and Parkes had a direct fuel injection with dual ignition . The engine in the Coupé from Guichet and Parkes had normal carburettors in addition to the double ignition . Biscaldi and Casoni had to get along with their coupé without double ignition and injection. From the field of privately used Ferrari, two GT cars were mentioned. In the Ferrari 250LM from Antonio Nicodemi and Francesco Lessona , as well as the Ferrari 275 GTB / C from Luciano Conti and Vittorio Venturi , the conventional 3.3-liter V12 engines were replaced by 4-liter units.
Porsche had by the construction of 50 vehicles, the homologation of the Porsche 906 for the racing class of sports cars - prototypes made. Ten 906s competed in the Targa, including four works cars. Colin Davis and Günter Klass drove a 906 with a 2.2-liter eight-cylinder boxer engine that was already used in the 904/8 . Gerhard Mitter and Joakim Bonnier's vehicle had a 2.0-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine with Bosch direct injection. The only Ford GT40 at the start was reported by Ford France and driven by Guy Ligier and Henri Greder .
In the small GT and sports car classes , the racing cars from Lancia and Alpine were in the 1.3-liter class. Almost a dozen Lancia Fulvia HF competed, including a works car for Leo Cella and Achille Marzi . The Alpine A110s included two works cars registered by Renault , with Jean Vinatier , Pierre Orsini , Pauli Toivonen and Bengt Jansson at the wheel.
The course of the race
On the Saturday evening before race day, a violent thunderstorm fell over the region that lasted well after midnight. When the race started at 8 o'clock in the morning on Sunday, the dark clouds had still not cleared. First at the start was Giuseppe Garofalo with a Fulvia HF, then the remaining participants followed at intervals of 20 seconds; as the last Nino Vaccarella in the 330P3. After the first lap, Leo Cella was the first to pass the start and finish line in his Fulvia HF. He started the race in ninth place and overtook the eight competitors who started in just one lap. In the race, however, Vaccarella was three seconds ahead of Gerhard Mitter's Porsche, who took the lead on the second lap and was 18 seconds faster than Vaccarella on this lap.
During the third lap, the rain began to rain again, and it grew stronger as the event progressed. The Finnish rally driver Timo Mäkinen showed his driving skills and drove a spectacular race with his MGB . The rain took a toll on drivers and technology. The Ferrari Dino pilots had problems with the windshield wipers , which were too small. The race was decided by accidents. Hans Herrmann had an accident with the 906 on the seventh lap, and the race for the leading Bandini in the 330P3, who lost track and retired, also ended on the same lap. A little later, Mitter retired in the now leading Porsche when he collided with his teammate Günter Klaas while overtaking.
In the end, however, a Porsche won. Willy Mairesse and Herbert Müller won the Scuderia Filipinetti in 906 . Eight minutes behind, Guichet and Baghetti finished second in their best Ferrari.
