Timo Mäkinen (born March 18, 1938 in Helsinki ; † May 4, 2017 there ) was a Finnish rally driver and known as the flying Finn of rallying.

Life

Timo Mäkinen took part in an international rally for the first time in 1959. At that time he started with a Triumph TR3 at the 1000 Lakes Rally (today: Rally Finland ).

In 1964 Mäkinen mostly drove with Minis , but won the RAC Rally in class 3 at the end of the year with an Austin-Healey . The next year he won the Monte Carlo Rally and the 1000 Lakes Rally and also came second in the RAC Rally .

Between 1973 and 1975 Mäkinen won all RAC rallies and, among other things, came first in the Finnish Rally Championship three times.

In 1994 Mäkinen completed his career on the 30th anniversary of the victory of the Rallye Monte Carlo 1964 by participating in the same competition. He drove a Mini here. In 2010 he received a place in the Rally Hall of Fame .

Timo Mäkinen died on May 4, 2017 in Helsinki.
