The Ukrainian lost his opening match against his compatriot Jewhen Palamar 4: 5. He then won 5-0 against Moldovans Boris Brauda and Dan Bratu , before losing 4-5 to Russian Daniil Boguschewski in the fourth losing round .

The then European champion and last year third Oleksandr Palamar also only needed two games to reach the finals. He defeated Garri Telembez and his compatriot Jehor Schukowskyj . In addition to him, four of the twelve Ukrainian participants moved through the winning round in the round of the last 32 with his older brother Jewhen and Danylo Besuhlow , Artur Piwtschenko and Jaroslaw Tarnowezkyj . Wadym Korjahin , Oleh Matschtakow and Jewhen Talow came through the loser round into the sixteenth finals.

Then he managed a victory against the Lithuanian Valeri Ivanov , before he was defeated in the third losing round to the Moldovan Sergei Kryschanowski (4: 5) and was eliminated.

Kazakhstan had the third largest number of participants after Russia and Ukraine (11). Tschimbayev's predecessors as world champions Aues Jeljubajew and Alichan Karanejew as well as the reigning Kazakh champion Alibek Omarow reached the knockout phase via the winning round. Jeljubajew defeated Dieter Johns 5: 2 in the first round and was then able to prevail against his compatriot Emil Mudarissow , the vice world champion of 2000 , and the Russian Sergei Tusow . Omarow won in the preliminary round against the Russian Pawel Kuzmin (5: 4) and the Azerbaijani Tofik Kulijew (5: 2). The four other players besides Nikita Liwada and Semjon Untilow who were able to prevail as losers round qualifiers in the round of 32 were Pawel Kuzmin , Oleh Matschtakow , Kanybek Sagynbajew and Dauren Urynbajew . Kuzmin won against Sergei Bogdanov , Matschtakow against Vacif Mamedow , Sagynbayev against Yevgeny Kurta and Urynbajew against Viktor Kurilenko. In the second round of sixteen between two Russians, two round of 16 players from 2009, Dmitri Bajew and Andrei Freise , met. Bajew prevailed 6-2 and thus reached the round of the last 16 for the third time in a row. In two games of the first knockout round there was a duel between two Kazakhs. Alichan Karanejew won against Ildar Mingasitdinow and Aues Jeljubajew against Maxim Pan. In addition, the Kazakh Alibek Omarow defeated the Ukrainian Wadym Korjahin and thus reached the round of the last 16 for the first time in his third World Cup participation.

As in the previous year, Kanybek Sagynbajew and Dmitri Bajew met in the round of 16. Sagynbayev, who prevailed 6: 1 the year before, now won 6: 4. Two of the four newcomers to the World Cup still in the tournament met in this round. Danylo Besuhlow prevailed 6: 5 against Nikita Liwada. While the Ukrainian Artur Piwtschenko defeated his compatriot Oleh Matschtakow 6: 4, Semjon Untilow, the fourth debutant, was eliminated 5: 6 against Alibek Omarov. The Russian Yuri Pashchinsky continued his winning streak against the Kazakhs Alichan Karaneev, but had to give up more than three games for the first time at 6: 4. Jewhen Palamar won 6: 4 against Wladislaw Osminin. His younger brother Oleksandr Palamar, however, was eliminated against the Russian Pawel Kuzmin, who reached the quarter-finals for the first time. In the duel between the two Kazakhs Dauren Urynbayev and Aues Jeljubajew, Urynbayev prevailed in the decider.

In the following round, however, Urynbayev was eliminated 3: 6 against Pavel Kuzmin. The three other quarter-finals were each decided in the playoff. Sagynbayev defeated Jewhen Palamar and moved into the semifinals of the World Cup in the Free Pyramid for the third time in three years. The Kazakh Alibek Omarow won against Pivchenko, while the Ukrainian Danylo Besuhlow defeated the Russian Yuri Pashchinsky and thus reached the semifinals as the only World Cup newcomer. There Besuhlow met the Russian Kusmin, to whom he lost 3: 6. In the second semifinals, Kanybek Sagynbajew defeated the Kazakh champion Omarow 6: 5 and reached the final of a world championship in Russian billiards for the fifth time.

In the final, last year's finalist Kanybek Sagynbajew, who had become vice world champion in the combined pyramid for the second time at the beginning of the year , met the Russian Pawel Kuzmin, who had never made it past the quarter-finals of a World Cup. Both finalists had qualified for the knockout phase via the losers' round. They had previously played against each other at a world championship: The Kyrgyz beat the Russians 5-2 in the 2006 round of 16. In the final, Sagynbayev won the first game 8-0 and Kuzmin also equalized 8-0. The Kyrgyz again won the third game with 8: 3. He then won three games in a row 8-0, before a contested game followed with the seventh game, which was only decided with the 15th ball. The previous year's finalist sank this, increasing it to 6-1 after games. Then Kuzmin won another game before Sagynbayev secured the ninth game with 8-2 and became the first Kyrgyz world champion in the Free Pyramid. After winning the World Cup in the Dynamic Pyramid in 2007, it was his second world title. He was the first player to become world champion in two disciplines of Russian billiards.
