The world championship was opened by the Kyrgyz President Almasbek Atambayev . 98 athletes from 20 countries took part, more than ever before in a Combined Pyramid World Cup. Defending champion Nikita Liwada lost his opening match. He had to admit defeat to Oleksandr Boiko 2-4 , but then qualified for the final round with a 4-3 win against Rysbek Assanbekow . Last year's finalist and 2007 world champion Oleksandr Palamar came through the preliminary round with more confidence. The Ukrainian lost only one game in his two preliminary round games. The two semi-finalists of the 2011 World Cup, Kanybek Sagyndykow and Jaroslaw Tarnowezkyj , also reached the final round via the winning round, as did Jaroslaw Wynokur , who became World Champion in the Free Pyramid in October 2011 . For Vidjai Drangoi , who reached the semi-finals in October, the World Cup ended after two games without a game win. Of the five previous world champions in the Combined Pyramid, only Alichan Karaneev , the 2008 winner , did not take part. While Jernar Tschimbajew ( 2010 winner ) made it to the finals with an opening win against Vadim Berdyshev , Aues Jeljubajew ( 2009 world champion ) lost his first encounter against Alexander Sidorov just 3: 4 before he also won the round with a clear win against Kshishtav Doroshkevich the last reached 64.
Most of the participants, 22 each, came from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Two players from the host country qualified through the winning round for the second phase of the tournament: Kanybek Sagynbajew , who had been very committed to hosting the World Cup in his home country, defeated World Cup debutant Dastan Lepschakow 4-1, and Asslan Shorokulov won without Loss of game against former vice world champion Emil Mudarissow and Boris Shnepel . On the losing side, eleven other Kyrgyz made it into the final round, including the World Cup newbies Ulukman Karagulow , Aschnaur Kudsijew , Rustam Pussurmanow and Asat Sabyr uulu . The only participant from the German-speaking area was Dieter Johns, who lives in Germany and competes for the USA . He stayed in his two preliminary round games against Alexander Tschepikow and Sergei Tusow without a game win.
Final round
In the round of the last 64 there was a qualifier of the winning round on one of the losing round. The losers' round qualifiers prevailed seven times. For example, Alibek Omarow defeated the Russian Sergei Kurmanajew and Kanat Sydykow defeated the Kazakhs Serik Sautow . The winning series of Kirill Filippow , Pavlo Radionov , Andrei Larionov , Asat Tumenow and Kanybek Sagynbajew were also ended. The latter lost to defending champion Nikita Liwada . While Oleksandr Palamar prevailed 4-1 against Alexei Kostjuk and Jernar Tschimbajew clearly won against Ajubchon Temirchonow , Aues Jeljubajew was eliminated as the first of the four participating former combined pyramid world champions. The Kazakh had to admit defeat to the Free Pyramid World Champion from 2005 , Yuri Pashchinsky , 3: 4. In addition, Armen Gabrielian, the World Cup finalist of the Free Pyramid in 2011, dropped out.
The reigning Free Pyramid World Champion Jaroslaw Wynokur was eliminated in the round of 32, as in the previous year, he lost to his compatriot Jehor Schukowskyj . The record world champion and last year third Kanybek Sagyndykow lost his sixteenth finals against Alibek Omarow. Defending champion Liwada defeated Oleg Yerkulew and Jernar Tschimbajew prevailed against Kuanysch Abpassow . Of the host's four remaining participants, only Kanat Sydykow reached the next round. He defeated the Uzbek Alexander Sidorow 4-2. On the other hand, Sailan Adamow lost to Maxim Pan , Arnal Ormokejew to Oleksandr Palamar and Asslan Schorokulow to Schuchratullo Saibdschanow .
The last two World Cup debutants were eliminated in the round of 16: The Russian Mikhail Deldinow lost 3-5 against Kanat Sydykow and the Uzbek Schuchratullo Saibdschanow lost to Nikita Liwada 5--1. The Kazakhs Jernar Tschimbajew lost 3: 5 against his compatriot Dauren Urynbajew . The Ukrainians Oleksandr Palamar and Jaroslaw Tarnowezkyj were able to prevail, 5-0 they defeated Gleb Waschtschenkow and Alibek Omarow respectively. Oleksandr Boiko defeated Jauhen Kurta 5-2. The other two round of 16 went the full distance; Alexander Tschepikow prevailed against Jehor Schukowskyj and Yuri Pashchinsky won against Maxim Pan.
In the quarter-finals, the previous year's final was reissued. Nikita Liwada was able to prevail again against Oleksandr Palamar, this time with 5: 2. Kanat Sydykow, who only took part in a World Cup for the second time and had reached the final round for the first time, continued his winning streak in the quarter-finals against last year's third Jaroslaw Tarnowezkyj 5-2. Oleksandr Boiko had to admit defeat to Alexander Tschepikow 1: 5. With the same result, Yuri Pashchinsky won against Dauren Urynbajew. In the semifinals, Tschepikow only narrowly won 6: 5 against Sydykow and Pashchinsky defeated Liwada 6: 3. For the first time two Russians reached the final of a world championship in the combined pyramid.
While 29-year-old Yuri Pashchinsky was in a World Cup final for the third time and had already become world champion in the Free Pyramid in 2005, Alexander Tschepikow, who was four years younger than him, had never made it past the last sixteen in his four World Cup appearances. Nevertheless, Chepikov won the first of a maximum of thirteen games. The favorite Pashchinsky then won three games, the last of which with an eight-point series. In the fifth game, Tschepikow again managed a series of eight. The sixth game was secured by Pashchinsky, who took the lead 4-2. Then Tschepikow turned the game. He won the following five games, in which his opponent only scored ten points, and became world champion for the first time by winning 7-4.
