Jaroslaw Wassyljowytsch Tarnowezkyj ( Ukrainian Ярослав Васильович Тарновецький ; born  September 9, 1990 ) is a Ukrainian billiard player from Chernivtsi , who competes in the billiard variant Russian billiards . He was twice world champion - 2012 in the dynamic pyramid discipline and 2013 in the combined pyramid - and won the Kremlin Cup twice (2009, 2011).

Career

From 2005 Tarnowezkyj took part in the European Cup. After reaching the round of 16 in his first tournament, he made it to the quarter-finals for the first time in 2006. In March 2007 he formed together with Olena Afanasjewa and Jaroslaw Wynokur the Ukrainian team at the Team World Cup and won the bronze medal. A little later he moved into the final of the European Junior Championships , in which he was defeated 6: 7 by the Russian Artyom Sotov . In April, at the age of 16, he took part in an individual world championship for the first time. At the Combined Pyramid World Cup in Almaty he reached the round of 16 and lost 2: 4 to Daniil Boguschewski . In the months of May to October he reached the finals in three tournaments and lost all of them. At the tournament of the Eurasian Cities Grand Prix in Moscow he was defeated by the Armenian Arman Baklatschjan (0: 1), at the Ukrainian Independence Cup in Odessa to the reigning world champion Oleksandr Palamar (2: 6) and at the Eurasian City Grand Prix in Minsk to the Kyrgyz Kanybek Sagynbajew (5: 6). At the Dynamic Pyramid World Cup in 2007 he reached the round of 32, in which he was eliminated 6: 7 against Alexander Tschepikow . In December 2007 he won the final tournament of the European Cup, in which he turned a 2-6 deficit in the final against Artem Moisejenko to a 7-6 victory.

At the beginning of 2008 Tarnowezkyj retired from the Combined Pyramid World Cup in the round of 32 against Vidjai Drangoi (3: 4) and at the Junior European Championship in the round of 16 against the eventual winner Sergei Pletnew (0: 5). A little later he won bronze again at the Team World Cup, this time together with Artur Piwtschenko and Schanna Schmattschenko . His first participation in the European Championship in the adult class ended with one win and two losses after the preliminary round. In the year 2009 Tarnovetskyj started with a third place at the European Cup tournament in Khmelnyzkyj . In October 2009 he achieved his hitherto greatest success when he won the Kremlin Cup with a 4-2 final victory over Dmitri Bajew . A few days later he also made it into the final at the European Championship, but now he had to admit defeat to Oleksandr Palamar 2: 7. In November 2009 he made his first appearance in the World Cup in the Free Pyramid in the round of 16, where he lost 4-6 against Aleh Retschyz . At the European Cup final, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Wladimir Wainzwaig (4: 6).

After Tarnovetskyj had finished third in the Ukrainian championship in 2010, he secured his first World Cup medal at the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid when he made it to the semifinals, in which he was able to equalize against Kanybek Sagynbayev after a 1: 4 deficit , but finally lost 4: 6. In May 2010 he won a bronze medal in the European Cup when he lost in the semifinals of the tournament in Moscow to the eventual tournament winner Vidjai Drangoi (2: 6). At the Kremlin Cup 2010 he reached the quarter-finals, in which the defending champion was eliminated against Pavel Mechowow (4-5). A little later he lost to the Russian Nikita Liwada (1: 6) in the round of 32 at the Free Pyramid World Cup in Willingen . At the end of the year he reached the round of 16 at the European Championship and the final tournament of the European Cup and won the final tournament of the Kiev tournament series Buffalo .

At the beginning of 2011 Tarnovetskyj moved into the final of the Ukrainian Championship of the Combined Pyramid for the first time, but lost 5-6 against Artem Matvejtschuk . A little later he won in the final against Oleksandr Palamar (8: 4) the invitation tournament The Glorious Eight in Saint Petersburg . At the Combined Pyramid World Championships in 2011 he won the bronze medal for the second time in a row, this time he had to admit defeat to former world champion Oleksandr Palamar (4-5) in the semifinals. In April he reached the final at the World Cup in Moldovan Chișinău for the first time, in which, however, he lost to his compatriot Artem Moisejenko (2: 6). After reaching the round of 16 at the European Championships, he became Ukrainian champion in the dynamic pyramid for the first time in August 2011 , in the final he prevailed 6-1 against Serhiy Petrasch . A few days later he reached the final of the Ukrainian Independence Cup, this time losing 3: 7 to Artur Pivchenko. In September he was the best Ukrainian participant in the Imperija Cup in Ussuriysk , finishing fifth. Shortly afterwards he won the Leader Open Cup in Kiev against Dmytro Biloserow (7: 3) in the final. In the following week he secured the bronze medal at the Free Pyramid World Championships, also in his second World Cup participation of the year. After defeating the former world champion Yuri Pashchinsky and Älibek Omarow , among others , he had to admit defeat to eventual world champion Jaroslaw Wynokur 4: 6 in the semifinals . In December 2011 he won the Kremlin Cup for the second time , making him the most successful player of the tournament to date. As in his first win in 2009, he beat Dmitri Bajew in the final, this time 4-3. A little later he moved into the final at the Kazakh Independence Cup in Astana and lost to three-time world champion Kanybek Sagyndykow (5-7).

At the 2012 World Cup kick-off, Tarnovetsky won his second World Cup medal. At the tournament in Rostov-on-Don he was only slightly defeated in the semifinals by the eventual winner Yuri Pashchinsky (5-6). Shortly afterwards he became Ukrainian champion in the combined pyramid for the first time in the final against Dmytro Burlatschenko (6: 1). At the World Cup in this discipline , after third places in the previous two years, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Kanat Sydykow (2: 5). In April he reached the semifinals of the Sporthall Cup and the round of 16 of the Robitex Cup. A month later he reached the final of the Moscow Mayor's Cup, where he lost 4-7 to Gleb Vashchenkov . At the EM 2012 he won the bronze medal after he was eliminated in the semifinals against Sergei Goryslavets (2: 6). A little later he moved into the final of the Asian Cup , in which he had to admit defeat to Kazakh Älichan Qaranejew 2: 7. After reaching the semi-finals of the Imperija Cup, he was eliminated from the 2012 Free Pyramid World Cup in the round of 64 against Vidjai Drangoi (5-6) and at the Kremlin Cup in the same round against Gleb Waschtschenkow (1: 5). In November 2012 he became world champion for the first time at the Dynamic Pyramid World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk . After defeating Artur Piwtschenko, Sergei Tusow and Jauhen Saltouski , among others , he prevailed 6: 5 in the final against Pawel Mechowow and thus won a world title in Russian billiards as the third Ukrainian . A little later he retired from the Savvidi Cup in the round of 16.

Five months after his first world title, Tarnovetskyi became world champion for the second time in February 2013 in Kemerovo . At the Combined Pyramid World Cup he won against Kacper Filipiak , Alexander Banny and Oleksandr Palamar, the only Ukrainian World Cup winner in this discipline to date, before defeating local hero Viktor Loktew 6: 3 in the final. After Kanybek Sagynbajew, he was the second player to win a world title in two disciplines of Russian billiards. In the following weeks he finished third in the Vyacheslav Schmigelsko Cup, the Savvidi Cup and the Prince Open . At the World Cup in the Dynamic Pyramid he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Älichan Qaranejew (4: 6). A few days later he won the Bastau Cup, also held in Almaty, in the final against Oleksandr Palamar (7: 5). In September 2013 he had to accept a first round at the Free Pyramid World Cup after a 3: 7 opening defeat against eventual world champion Nikita Liwada in his fourteenth World Cup participation. After an early elimination at the World Cup, he moved into the finals in two tournaments within two weeks and met Aleksandr Sidorov there . While he had to admit defeat to the Uzbeks 3: 5 in the Imperija Cup, he took revenge at the Mayor's Cup in Vladivostok with a 5: 2 victory. At the Kremlin Cup 2013 , however, followed with a narrow 3: 4 defeat against the eventual tournament winner Wladislaw Osminin in the round of 64 again an early break. In early 2014 Tarnovetskyj reached the final of the Kirov million tournament, which he lost 6-2 to Oleksandr Palamar, and won the Arena Open in Zhytomyr with a 4-0 final win against Yevhen Novossad . In July 2014, he won his third European Championship medal in Minsk when he was defeated by the Belarusian Jauhen Kurta 5: 6 in the semifinals . A month later he reached the semi-finals of the Combined Pyramid World Cup for the fourth time in four years, in which the defending champion Tarnowezkyj had to admit defeat to the Russian Nikita Liwada 5-6 despite a 4-1 lead. In January 2015 Tarnovetskyi won the bronze medal at the Ukrainian Championship in the Combined Pyramid. A little later he was eliminated from the Combined Pyramid World Cup with one win and two defeats for the first time in the preliminary round. At the beginning of April 2015, he finished fifth at the superfinal of the World Championships, an invitation tournament for the eleven best players from the World Championships last year. A few days later he reached the round of 32 at the Prince Open and met Dmitri Orlow there . Tarnovetskyi was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct towards the referee in the game against the Russian on April 17, 2015. Six days later, the World Federation's Disciplinary Committee banned him from all official tournaments until the end of the year, which resulted in him missing two world championships, among other things, and fined him $ 500  . Furthermore, a two-year suspension on probation was issued. In his first tournament after the incident, the Imperija Cup in September 2015, Tarnovetskyi finished fourth.

After the suspension had ended, Tarnowezkyj reached the round of 16 at the Combined Pyramid World Cup in March 2016 and was eliminated from Älibek Omarow (3: 6). Two months later he became Ukrainian runner-up in the Dynamic Pyramid after a 3: 6 defeat in the final against Jurij Smyrnow . In September 2016 he reached the semifinals of the Savvidi Cup for the second time after 2013 and was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Dastan Lepschakow (1: 5). After finishing fifth in the Imperija Cup in 2016, he reached the round of 16 at the World Cup in the Dynamic Pyramid , where he had won against defending champion Dastan Lepschakow, in which he was defeated 4-7 by Kanybek Sagynbajew from Kyrgyzstan. In November he reached the quarter-finals of the Kremlin Cup and won the Lviv Open with a 9: 6 final victory over Mark Pleschko . In March 2017 Tarnovetskyj reached the semi-finals of the Elite Profi Open in Vinnytsia and was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Artur Pivchenko (4-5). A little later he reached the round of 16 at the Combined Pyramid World Cup with a 6: 5 win against defending champion Aleksandr Sidorov, in which he lost 6: 2 to Dmytro Biloserow. At the Savvidi Cup 2017 , after his third place in the previous year, he was eliminated in the round of 64 against Ruslan Akbulatow (3: 5).

In the two following years Tarnowezkyj played only a few international tournaments and suffered early defeats there. In 2018 he was eliminated from the Savvidi Cup and the Free Pyramid World Cup in the round of 64. At the Savvidi Cup 2019 , he just missed the sixteenth finals. At national level, reaching the round of 16 at the Ukrainian Free Pyramid Championship in October 2019 was his best result in these two years .

Others

In November 2008, Tarnovetskyi set a world record when he won 5: 1 against his compatriot Artur Pivchenko within 48 minutes , making it the fastest best-of-9 match at an official Russian billiards tournament . He beat Yevgeny Stalev's previous record by six minutes.
