history

Soviet city coat of arms (1976)

Ussuriysk was founded in 1866 as Nikolskoje ( Нико́льское ) and, due to its favorable location, soon developed into a trading center. Its importance increased greatly during the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway , but especially after its completion in 1916.

In 1898 the place received city rights as Nikolsk ( Нико́льск ), in 1913 it was the fourth largest city in the Russian Far East. After the revolution of 1917 Nikolsk was systematically expanded the agricultural center of the region. From 1926 the city was named Nikolsk-Ussurijski ( Нико́льск-Уссури́йский , i.e. Ussurian Nikolsk ) to distinguish it from cities of the same name , on November 5, 1935 the city was renamed to Kliment Voroshilov ( Вороши́лов ).

After Nikita Khrushchev came to power in 1957, the city was given its current name. The Ussuri River has its source in the Sichote-Alin Mountains east of Ussuriysk, but does not flow through the city of Ussuriysk, but more than 150 km away from it. Rather, the place name refers to the traditional name of this part of Primorye derived from the river as "Ussuri region" (Russian Уссурийский край , Ussurijski krai ).
