history

The place originated in the 1960s when coal mining began nearby and the construction of a thermal power plant began. For this purpose, the small left Bikin tributary Kontrowod was dammed into a cooling water reservoir several square kilometers in size.

In 1966 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement. Its name is derived from the Russian luch ( лучь ) for ray . Luchegorsk is now the largest place in the Far East of Russia without city rights.
