Kamen-Rybolow ( Russian Ка́мень-Рыболо́в ) is a village in the Primorye region ( Russia ) with 10,909 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located in the Far East of Russia on the western bank of Lake Khanka , about 180 kilometers (as the crow flies) north of the regional capital, Vladivostok .

Kamen-Rybolov is the administrative center of the Rajons Chankaiski (Lake Khanka-Rayon).

history

The village was founded in 1865 by resettlers from central Russia near Military Post No. 8 , location of the headquarters of the 3rd East Siberian Border Battalion, after the Primorsky Territory was annexed to Russia according to the Treaty of Aigun in 1858. Its name is a combination of the Russian words came for stone or rock and rybolow for fisherman , literally "fish catcher" ; the exact reason for this designation is unknown. In 1867 and 1868 Nikolai Prschewalski visited Lake Khankas on his first trip; In his book Journey to the Ussuri Region , he also describes the early years of the village of Kamen-Rybolow. Later other naturalists like Richard Maack stayed in the village.

In 1933 a railway line was opened starting from the Mansowka station (today Sibirzewo ) of the Trans-Siberian Railway along the western bank of Lake Chanka via Kamen-Rybolow to Novokachalinsk (Katschalowka) (and in 1941 it was extended to Turi Rog, directly on the border with China ).

In 1936 a military airfield was built on the western outskirts of the village, where the 47th fighter regiment of the Soviet air force was stationed. This first played a significant role during the Japanese-Soviet border conflict in 1938/1939. In 1946 the regiment was relocated; the airfield was used for civil purposes until 1990.

On January 4, 1926, Kamen-Rybolow was the administrative center of Lake Khanka Rajons. In the 1960s in particular, the village grew rapidly with the settlement of fish and agricultural products processing companies and the incorporation of the immediately adjacent village of Astrachanka.

The Far Eastern Scientific Research Institute for Plant Protection (DWNIISR) is based in Kamen-Rybolow .

Economy and Infrastructure

The main industries are agriculture and fishing as well as the food industry. Various businesses, such as a brick factory and a fish processing factory, were closed in the 1990s.

Kamen-Rybolow is on the Sibirzewo – Turi Rog railway line (km 77). The regional road A182 runs through the village, which also leads from Mikhailovka near Ussuriysk on the M60 Khabarovsk – Vladivostok road to Turi Rog. From this the A185 branches off via Sharikovo to Barabasch-Lewada, small villages in the sparsely populated low mountain range along the border with the People's Republic of China .
