Artjom ( Russian Артём ) is a city with 102,603 ​​inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Primorye region in Russia , 53 km northeast of the Pacific metropolis of Vladivostok .

The city mainly consists of one to five-story apartment buildings in brick or panel construction . But there are also a relatively large number of wooden private houses.

history

The city was founded in 1924 near a coal mine. This was named after the famous revolutionary with the nickname Artjom (actually Fyodor Sergejew ). On October 26, 1938, the place was given city status.

In 2004 there were numerous incorporations, which increased the population of the city from 64,000 to over 100,000. Artyom became a big city . Incorporated were u. a. the urban settlements of Artyomovsky, Zavodskoi and Uglowoye.

Economy and Transport

There are several industrial companies in the city, mainly from the consumer goods sector (furniture and clothing companies).

Coal mining was previously the basis of the local economy. However, it is becoming increasingly less important as coal reserves are running out.

The largest marshalling yard in the Primorye region, Uglowaya, is located in the urban area: every year twelve million tons of goods are handled here to Vladivostok and 24 million tons to Nakhodka .

The Vladivostok airport is located about two kilometers north of the city.
